Are the curves for classes such as Comprehensive Gen Chem, Honors Gen Chem, Organic, AP5 Bio, etc listed anywhere? Looking the course evaluations page, it doesn't seem as if the teachers change much from year to year, so I'd imagine the curves would be pretty standard.

Also, do premeds usually opt for regular level classes with a tough curve, or for heavier honors courses with a nicer curve?

FYI plz don't flame me for seemingly trying to take the easiest courses possible, as of now I'm very interested in AP5 Bio and Honors Gen Chem, unless some new info in this thread would suggest otherwise.

General Chemistry I: B/B+
General Chemistry II: B
General Chemistry III: B+/A-
Honors General Chemistry: B+/A- or all three quarters
Organic Chemistry I: B+
Organic Chemistry II: C/C+/B- (some variability here)
Organic Chemistry III: C/C+/B- (some variability here)
Honors Organic Chemistry I: B+
Honors Organic Chemistry II: B-/B/B+ (some variability here)
Honors Organic Chemistry III: B-/B/B+ (the professor I had set the average to an A-, which was unusual)
AP 5 Biology: B+ for all three quarters

Oh nice, it seems that the curving is more generous than I thought! Well, except for orgo, haha…

Just curious though, is this information listed anywhere for other classes too, including non-science courses? Or is it mostly a word of mouth/experience sort of thing?

And just making sure, I know Honors gen chem should be much more intense than regular gen chem, but regardless, does that curving really mean half the class gets either an A or A-? That seems unnaturally generous for UChicago…

While it may seem generous, the class is significantly harder so it ends up balancing out. Also, the students taking honors tend to be in the upper range chemistry-wise of UChicago students so the department thinks it wouldn’t make sense to punish talented students for challenging themselves. UChicago doesn’t really grade deflate anymore. It is not very uncommon to get A’s. Of course, one won’t get an A with minimal effort. The classes themselves are tough and students compensate for this by working very hard.

This information isn’t available anywhere so it’s by student experience.

Hmm ok, the logic with Honors Gen Chem makes sense. I’ve heard from other posts around this forum that Honors is “brutal” to say the least, so I’ll try it out but drop to Comprehensive Gen Chem if it’s too tough.

Also, just for comparison, how are the classes/curve for Fundamental Bio? And what is the difference between the A and B tracks? I’m considering majoring in Biological Chemistry, so taking the AP5 sequence objectively seems like overkill considering I’d only need two quarters of Fundamental Bio to satisfy the major (BIOS 20186-20187).
