Hi! I'm applying as a transfer to multiple BFA and BA programs for next year and I was wondering if anyone had a list of schools with cut programs? I'd prefer to stay away from them if possible! Thanks!!!

Milikin was known for a draconian cut program called “the hurdles.” I don’t know if it’s still in use. Our D’s acting coach had one of his students cut between junior and senior years, but that was a few years ago.

Emerson used to have a cut program but eliminated it (should I have said “cut it”?) last year. I don’t know how long this change will remain, because the auditor at Chicago Unifieds earlier this year expressed his disappointment with not being able to cut students.

University of Arizona still has a cut program in place.

Cal State Fullerton has a cut program.

thanks everyone!

I think CCM also has a cut program – they say they do in their FAQ – but they call it a “retention” program…

The “retention” program is for CCM Drama, not CCM Musical Theatre.

Doesn’t Northwestern have a cut program?

Technically Northwestern isn’t exactly a cut program. Students start out as theater majors, but have to audition for the musical theater program in the fall of their sophomore year. About 30 are chosen. I believe those who are not chosen can still remain as theater majors.

Yes, if you don’t make it into the Northwestern MT program, you can remain as a theatre major. Auditions for the MT certificate program are now held freshman year; you can also audition as a sophomore if you don’t get in your freshman year. Also, if you are not in the MT certificate program, there are still lots of opportunities to perform in musicals and to take MT-related courses.
