CWRU Computer Science classes - availability?

Hi all,

I’ve been reading through the CWRU posts, and some of you are saying that it is hard to get the CS classes you want as a computer science major, that the department is understaffed, that they don’t seem to be keeping up well with demand/growth. I’m wondering if this is a minority of students making a lot of noise, or if this is how the majority of computer science majors feel at CWRU these days?

I e-mailed CWRU’s computer science department, but they weren’t that helpful in giving me a picture of what the department is like right now-- how fast electives fill up, etc. They did say that they have hired two new faculty in the past two years and are continuing to hire new faculty. They also said they “have been working on a plan to increase the number of CS courses taught each semester.”

Thanks for any information you can provide. Would love to hear from current Case students or parents.

My son majored in physics and took about 4 CS classes, and did not have any trouble enrolling back in 2014-2017. He also TAed for the algorithms professor , and got recommendations from that professor. The CS program is strong and well organized. My son’s friend took a fifth year in CS to earn a masters degree, and has offers every summer, from Microsoft and other west coast firms.

I don’t think registration is very hard at Case Western in general. The school is small and students get the classes they need to graduate in four years.

By comparison, my son at GaTech, struggles to register for what he needs, and lots of kids need five years, to get a bachelors degree in CS at Gatech.

That rarely happened to my son at CWRU. You may not have the most advanced computer scientists doing the most cutting edge research at Case, though, because their PhD programs are not the very top rank, but its still pretty strong.
Case is more of an undergraduate focused environment, so professors will be helpful.

Note that CWRU is one of the first, along with Berkeley and Purdue U, to offer a bachelors of science in DATA SCIENCE and ANALYTICS, as well as computer science, and computer engineering.

Thanks very much, Coloradomama, that is useful information.
