CWRU PPSP vs Miami HPME

Son got his 2 top choices to choose from BS/MD programs.
Miami HPME 7yrs vs CWRU PPSP 8 yrs. Both offering scholarships as well.

Miami- 7 yrs, warm/nice weather, excellent campus.
Cleveland- 8 yrs, cold whether, higher uni and medical college rankings.

Give your sugestions/comments.

Your son can’t go wrong either way. Its a matter of priorities. If he is interested in research, an MD/PHD, or being a medical scientist then Case is an excellent choice. President Snyder has raised lots of money and Case is moving up in the rankings. Lots of new construction has occurred. Plans for a new med school are on the table. The Cleveland Clinic is next door. But Cleveland is cold and windy and a sewer. I did not enjoy my personal time while at Case.

Undergrad rankings are pretty close. For 2012 Case was only ranked one spot higher. Miami dropped a little for 2013 but President Shalala is very rank oriented and is striving to get back into the 30s. Coconut Grove and South Beach beat the Warehouse District any day of the week.

Case Med is obviously ranked higher than Miller but your son could probably get a decent residency match from either.

CWRU, no doubt. Medical School is not in the bad location at all. A bit of concern for the location of UG, but you have to be careful no matter where you live. Great, great medical school, new innovative program, rotations start in March of the second year. Yes, they are done with lecture portions and all final exams by taht time. They can have a whole rotation scheduled just to prepare for the board, Step 1 and another one for Research. You will not find these type of opportunities at every Med. School.
I have no knowledge about Miami though.

As a PPSP student at case right now, I would say Case all the way, but of course I am a little biased. Please feel free to message me any questions you have about the school or the program or Cleveland in general to hell you make your decision. And for the record, I have never felt unsafe on campus and I love how close the medical school/UH/Cleveland clinic are because there are endless research/shadowing/volunteering opportunities.

I’m not sure about Miamis program but here you have to maintain a 3.6 GPA (very doable) and no MCAT necessary. You can apply out while maintaining your spot at CWRU though of course then you have to take the MCAT.

@READYTORETIRE: Thanks for your comments! The higher ranking definitely makes Case very attractive to him, but he agrees that the environment there may not be ideal. This is what he wants more information about before making a decision. He would be interested in research at both schools.

@MiamiDAP: Thanks a lot! Case’s medical school does seem to do an excellent job at preparing students for the field. He just doesn’t know if the location is the best for him.

@ferredoxin: Thanks for offering your firsthand experience at Case! That would definitely be very helpful to my son before he makes his decision. He will message you soon. The proximity of the medical school certainly sets Case apart from the other schools he has visited. At Miami, taking the MCAT is required and students must score above a 30. The environment and campus at Miami is what is making deciding difficult for him, in addition to saving an year.

Thought I would add one more minor point. College ******* gives Miami an A+ for girls while they give Case a C+. Based on my time at Case in the late 70s that grade for Case seems a little generous.

"in addition to saving an year. "

 • This was actually a disadvantage when my own D. decided between accelerated and non-accelerated bs/md programs. But it depends what you are looking for. D’s decision to consider the whle college experience vs. pre-med has proven to be correct (for her personally). While in 4 + 4 bs/md, she was able to have 2 minors, being part of soorirty, go abroad and having absolutely free summers (no single summer class). She also was able to participate in many medical EC’s that are still influencing her in a positive way while at Med. School. One of the biggies (never thought that way about it) appear to be her foregn languages. More opportunities, more positive comments / impressions. Looking back, D. definitely is very happy to have allowed herself 4 years of personal growth, development of great communication and other skills that would not be possibly if she crammed it all into 3 years. In addition, shorter might not be a cheapest route, it was not in D’s case. You have to look at the financial package offered for UG portion.

Thanks READYTORETIRE. That is an important point to consider!
And MiamiDAP, yes many people do think 3 years makes the college experience seem short. He’ll have to consider that, but in his case, the cost does end up being less for the 3 year Miami option. Thanks for all of your comments!

I would say CASE PPSP since doesn’t require MCAT, and MIAMI HPME does require one, though is a low score requirement, still have to prepare for it during the 4 year UG.

"Thought I would add one more minor point. College ******* gives Miami an A+ for girls while they give Case a C+. "
-Again, one experience vs another. D’s best friend graduated from Case UG Summa Cum Laude in 3.5 years. She was in PPSP and would be attending there, but for other personal considerations currently is at different Med. School. She did not have to take MCAT because of being in StarMed (or MedStar, not sure). What it is is that some Med. Schools have programs when they accept UGs in their Sophomore year. No MCAT, apparently need to be a top college student and go thru an interview. D’s friend loved Case UG though and was in sorority there. She is a first year Med. Student.
