Strengths: Essay, SAT
Weaknesses: GPA, lack of interest
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/waitlisted/rejected:Definitely lack of interest lol

General Comments: 30k merit. For future applicants, make sure to demonstrate interest. Visit campus, attend informational sessions, etc, Case seems to judge interest relatively greatly. Congratulations to those accepted! For those WL/denied move on to the next, there will be more opportunities. Case took 480 off the waitlist of 3000 in 2013, so there’s still a decent chance if you express your continued interest.

General Comments
My friend who had 3.6 gpa and 32 ACT and nothing else (extracurriculars, awards, etc) got in. But he did show lots of interest in Case so I’m thinking Case is waitlisting lots of overqualified students and accepting their “match” students.

How much interest did you express? Well I applied for PPSP but wasn’t accepted. However, I did ask to be considered for regular admission… Kinda my fault that I didn’t show as much interest as I should’ve. But it’s okay! Everything happens for a reason.

Weaknesses: Academic portion of my application is Weak (SAT & Course Rigor)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/waitlisted/rejected:

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I signed up for Case Western’s Mailing List prior to applying. Given the unbelievable waitlists above, I believe this slight factor may have been the demonstrated interest the admissions officers searched for.

Reflection
Strengths: essay and recommendations
Weaknesses: math section of ACT, wishing I had sent my SAT II scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/waitlisted/rejected: most likely didn’t show enough interest in the school because I only came across the school days before the deadline
Where else you are applying or have already applied: SUNY Stony Brook (accepted, full tuition scholarship), SUNY Binghamton (accepted), RIT (accepted), UChicago (waitlisted), Yale, Cornell, Harvard, NYU, University of Rochester, Boston University
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: It looks like I really should’ve attempted to show more interest in the school. I came across it randomly and decided to apply because there was no fee. While it IS one of the “easier” to get into schools I applied to, I was genuinely considering going there and was planning on visiting if I was accepted, so it’s unfortunate if the reason I was waitlisted is because they thought they were my safety school (RIT and the SUNY schools were; CWRU was not)

Major you put down: biology/pre-med
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: large public

Income Bracket: very low. Pell Grant recipient
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): unique history/family situation that drove all of my essays. It also explained why my GPA was so low freshman year (2.67 UW/2.75W) vs junior year (3.87UW/4.43W)

[ b]Reflection**
Strengths: essays, ACT score?
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/waitlisted/rejected: I think Case is truly a holistic school. They were able to overlook my horrific grades from my freshman year (including multiple Cs and a D in freshman health) in light of my situation. Go Case!
Where else you are applying or have already applied: waiting on a ton of schools. Accepted to Rutgers, Uconn, UMD WL at WashU, rejected from Columbia and MIT
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: While all schools claim to have holistic admission processes, some schools really mean it. Don’t let a bad past prevent you from success

Teacher Recommendations: really good I’m sure

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

[ b]Reflection**
Strengths: good student, above the stats for this university
Weaknesses: none
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/waitlisted/rejected: I’m just a strong candidate I think to Case
Where else you are applying or have already applied: rejected Caltech (early) and MIT (deferred early and rejected), accepted U of Illinois with scholarship, UChicago accepted, waiting to here from a bunch including Ivies and Stanford
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I want to know if other people got a note about their essay in their admissions decision or if it really was a personal note to me. Please let me know. Next to no chance I attend Case but it’s good to feel wanted and get the scholarship. It was nice to get in a little after I got rejected from MIT (my 1st choice). I really did think Case was a really good school when I visited and even had a bit of an MIT-esque feel.

One last thing: I know it says this is my first post but that’s a glitch since I made my account in November and posted a bunch back around EA/ED time.

Reflection

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/waitlisted/rejected: Didn’t show interest, didn’t research the school which led to a not-so-good interview

-Accepted: Cornell (likely), Wellesley (likely), UT Austin (accepted to Engineering Honors with scholarship and Plan II Honors)
-Deferred: Princeton SCEA
-Rejected: Nowhere yet, thankfully
-Waiting: Harvard, Harvey Mudd, Johns Hopkins, Rice, Stanford, Yale
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
Don’t really care about this, got likelies to Cornell and Wellesley, I’m much more than happy
If you’re applying to a school that likes interest, then actually show interest
It was pretty obvious that I was applying as a safety.

SAT II (place score in parentheses): US History (780)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.3? Ish? We use a 100 scale, and on that my GPA is 89.4
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 161/400-ish (Top 40%) (rank isn’t weighted)

Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit, Regents Biology (long story hahaha), Precalc, French 6, SUPA Economics, AP US Government, Holocaust through Literature

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Dance (teacher for younger students), Softball, Hiking, Cycling
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community Service: ~50 hours recorded, mostly with American Red Cross
Summer Activities: Nothing that colleges would care about!
Essays: Common App essay was great (They had a little P.S. on my acceptance that referred to it, which I’m really happy about  ), they also sent me a little supplement page sometime in Jan/Feb because I got deferred, but I did well on that too, I think!
Teacher Recommendations: Both probably 9 or 10 out of 10, one from APUSH teacher, the other from chem teacher, both of whom I have really good relationships with
Counselor Rec: Probably good, also was likely to explain poor freshman/sophomore grades (Junior GPA was about a 95, senior year so far has been 96-ish, but 9th and 10th bring my GPA down a ton)
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A
How much interest did you express? Not as much as I could have. We couldn’t afford a trip to go visit, but I have been on mailing lists and I think the supplement thing they sent me showed that I really am interested in Case.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
How much merit aid did you get? None (as far as I can tell!)
Major you put down: History (more specifically, American Studies, but that can only be declared as a second major!), Geological Sciences
State (if domestic applicant): NY
School Type: Very good public school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: ~85k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, at least as far as I can tell!

Reflection
Strengths: I think my application overall really let my personality shine, my nerdiness/love for learning especially. ACT score and recommendations also may have helped.
Weaknesses: GPA/Rank, extracurriculars could have been a lot better
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/waitlisted/rejected: The strengths listed, although I think lack of interest/rough grades may have been why I was deferred.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: UVM (14k/year scholarship), Geneseo, and still waiting on Macalester, BU, and St. Lawrence. Rejected from Tufts ED.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I’m really excited to have been accepted!! I don’t think I’ll be able to feasibly attend because even with the generous financial aid, I’d still probably have needed some merit aid to be able to afford it, but we’ll see

Future applicants who are serious about Case should be sure to show interest because (as this board shows) very qualified candidates seem to get rejected or waitlisted without doing so. Good luck!

Congrats to everyone else accepted, and everyone else will do great wherever they end up

Received a likely back in February, got accepted with University Scholarship. I didn’t “show interest” and didn’t have an interview or anything.
