@jkeil, in the item that mv posted above your post, it says those that applied for fall 2014 were not affected. But I think you should assume that your son, who I believe is a current student there, was affected by this breach.

jkeil911: it was on the local news but now that I have seen the wording of the various statements from UMD – I am not so sure. They have said 2014 applicants are not affected but what about the other applicants. Why would a school keep applicants’ info since 1998?

I have emailed them for further clarification and await a response. I would suggest everyone put a fraud alert on their account at the credit bureaus if their info has been exposed. UMD’s offer for the one year of credit monitoring does absolutely nothing.

This is the response from the email I sent them:

<<That database contained 309,079 records of faculty, staff, students and affiliated personnel from College Park and Shady Grove campuses who have been issued a University ID. Specifically, the breach includes:

o All current faculty, staff and students; and

o All faculty, staff and students who were in possession of a University ID card anytime between 1998 and present.

· If your affiliation with the university ended prior to 1998, our investigation has determined that your records have been purged and are not affected.>>

It says in possession of a University ID card, so students applying to UMD should not be affected. Will wait and see as they are suppose to be working on a site where you can enter your name and it will tell you if you have been affected by this.

thank you for this clarification.

Another answer to my email regarding applicants’ info:

<<Thank you for your inquiry. We understand you have questions about data security for applicants. All updates regarding the data breach can be found at <a href=“The University of Maryland | A Preeminent Public Research University”>www.umd.edu/datasecurity.

Specifically, the breach includes:

All current faculty, staff and students; and
All faculty, staff and students who were in possession of a University ID anytime between 1998 and present.

Unless you were in possession of a University ID card anytime between 1998 and present, our investigation has determined that your records are not affected.>>

If you didn’t get an UMD ID card, you were probably not affected by this breach.

That’s great to know. Next level question might be: if your child had a UMD ID card, did the affected records include parental information? if so, what information?

thanks, terpmom.

@jkeil911 - Just got an email that they extended the free credit protection service to 5 years instead of one…

They posted the updated communique on the site I listed before…<a href=“The University of Maryland | A Preeminent Public Research University”>The University of Maryland | A Preeminent Public Research University;

@jkeil911, also on the link I listed above, if you scroll down to update #5, at the very bottom it specifically states that parent data set was not breached so no parents are affected…

Been trying to sign up for two days now. Recording says high volume of calls and disconnects.

can anyone confirm or deny that social security numbers were associated with University ID cards such that when a card is swiped the social security number is part of the data that is transmitted? Has the university built a “firewall” between social security numbers and University ID cards?

This is a bit unsettling…

thank you, terpmom. credit agencies: the 21st century Medicis.

Have all the students who are currently attending UMD received the free 1 year of credit protection they were told they would get? My son is still waiting to hear from them and has not received anything (at home nor at school). His friends have all received something in the mail to sign up for the credit protection, but he is still waiting. Is anyone else still waiting? Any suggestions?
