I am looking for any experiences with students or parents of students in the Cybersecurity major or minor. This is an upcoming career and in low supply still. Colleges are just getting around to it.
Some colleges have a major for this (Purdue/USF/Penn State and others) and some may have a minor (V Tech/UTK and others).
If you have anything to share about a school’s program and what your child has learned, please share here.
My son’s best friend is at Dakota State University in their cyber program. They have two cyber-specific majors (Cyber Leadership and Intelligence, and Cyber Operations), and Dakota State has been named a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations by the NSA (one of 20 in the country). Students are also eligible for Cyber Corps scholarships–full ride scholarships that also come with a stipend.
They also have a cyber security certificate program.
I’m the first to admit that small-town South Dakota won’t be everybody’s cup of tea, but for kids that are sure about cybersecurity, especially in the context of intelligence/government service, it is a really good program.
My daughter is a junior at Tiffin University in OH and is a Cyber Security Major - it is a small school but she got a good scholarship, she is a student athlete (big D2 sports program) and has met a lot of diverse students. They are closely tied to Homeland Security and those types of federal agencies too so if there is an interest in that arena the internship opportunities are there. They have had the specialty for quite a few years now and seem to have active STEM, Women in STEM and other related clubs and organizations.
