D ECs matter and do we need a recom from a high school counselor/teacher?

Do ECs (in college and high school) matter if you want to transfer to a top notch college like the Ivies? Will it matter more if you're and international needing aid?

Do we need to send in a recom from a high school teacher/counselor?

YES (much more so for College though), Yes, No, but you could consider it if applying for sophomore standing.

You must have a high school counselor form, but recommendations must be from two college professors/instructors.

As for your second question, are you referring to the availability of aid or your international status affecting your admissions decision? Aid is scarce for every transfer, so do not expect much. With respect to international applicants, I assume it would be slightly more competitive, but I could be mistaken.

Your first question is a bit more murky, but ECs are far less important for transfers and weigh relatively little in the admissions process. Are you transferring as a sophomore/junior? If the former, your college transcript, college recommendations, high school transcript, SATs, SAT IIs, essays/statments, and ECs will all factor in that order (as the general consensus goes). If the latter, your success or failure in admissions is largely determined by your college transcript, college recommendations, and statements/essays; as your high school transcript and work prior to freshman year of college is less indicative of your ability to succeed at desired school. Bottom line: Don’t sweat it if your ECs in college are less than stellar, as the level of your school work is greater than that of your high school work by many, many orders of magnitude and thus your investment of time into ECs cannot possibly equal what it did in high school.

My HS sent all my old reccomendations, and one of my HS reccommendations was from my Physics/Calculus teacher who actually attended/worked at my top choice school. I got into that school, despite the fact that academics weren’t exactly on par.

I’d reccomend having them sent.

what about if you went to different high schools, which counselor should write the letter of reccs..

The counselor who graduated you would be most appropriate, as s/he would have access to your entire record.

thanks for answering

so do we need recoms from high school teachers/counselors?

You need that one recommendation from your high school counselor, but your others should be from your college instructors.

For Ec’s I’d suggest doing things like Student Gov, School Paper, basic Ec’s that won’t take up too much time while still providing you with the valuable content for your essays.

How do internationals get recoms from their high school teachers (in their own country) when they are now studying in the US (college)?

do these counselor recommendations matter much?
