After I was placed under some unfortunate circumstances, I ended up receiving a D in AP Calculus a/b for my first semester of senior year. I did everything I could, but I still got a D and there is no changing that now. I want to go to Chico State next year, and I’ve already been admitted but I am worried that this could get me rescinded. On my admission notice is says that all accepted applicants must get C’s or higher in classes that are needed to meet a-g requirements, but this is my fourth year of math so technically it’s not required. My gpa is 3.55 and my sat score is supposedly higher than the average sat for chico admits. I’ve never received a D before, and my grades in my other classes this semester were fairly good (3.25 gpa for semester including my D). Next semester I plan on busting my ass and getting at least a B in AP Calc, and a significantly higher gpa. How screwed am I? Will I be rescinded for this unfortunate flop?
I find it unlikely that you’ll get rescinded for it (assuming all of your other grades are fine). Try to avoid it from happening again though. You could try contacting them directly I suppose.
I could be very much wrong though, and hopefully I’m not.
Why did you get a D? Are you putting enough effort into this class? Are you those people that wait until the last two days before reviewing? Calculus is hard, but with practice, you’ll get it.
The pre-rec class for AP calc at my school is Adv. pre calc and both classes are taught by the same teacher. I was in regular Pre-Calculus and got an A and a B but the teacher didn’t really cover enough. The Ap calculus teacher had no sympathy for my situation (being behind based on last years classes), and didn’t want to help me because most of the stuff I was having trouble with wasn’t conceptual, it was algebraic stuff, so she just thought I wasn’t doing my work. We had only 3 tests all semester (tests are worth 50% of the grade) and I failed two of them. I’m putting the blame on me here, and I don’t want to turn this into a sob story. I tried my best, still got a d. I have slowly begun to catch up, so I think I can get a better grade next semester. I’ve also never been good at math.
Yea, Algebra is the reason why many people fail Calculus. I don’t think the reason for you failing is because you didn’t take adv.pre calc. There is something missing there. YOU DIDN"T PUT ENOUGH effort. If you knew AP calculus AB will be hard. You should have studied more. In the end, you are slowly catching up which is a good sign. So keep what you are doing!
Even you did take Advance precalculus, it will still be the outcome.
talk to your HS counselor. Answering questions like this is what they are paid to do.
I’m having the similar situation… but I’m wondering that if I retake those classes in my local community college is that going to be ok? And should I keep my class in high school? Or I should just drop it in my high school and only taking it in my local community college?
