D first semster senior year

I applied to 4 UC’s and 4 CSU’s. I got a D during my first semester for AP Calculus BC. The catch is: I’m an English major… will this affect my chances of getting admitted? I have no idea what to do next

All UC’s and CSU’s acceptances are provisional meaning that if you do not pass all Senior year courses with a C or higher, your acceptances could be rescinded regardless of intended major.

Have you gotten good grades A’s and B’s throughout your HS career? If so, then some schools may be more lenient and wait until you have completed your 2nd semester of AP Calculus BC to see if you pass with a C or higher. UC’s and CSU’s offer grade validation for Math courses, so getting a D or F 1st semester but passing 2nd semester with a C or higher will validate the 1st semester deficient grade.

You are required to notify the schools where you applied about the deficient grade. There is no specific deadline to notify these schools, but you need to notify them prior to enrolling and sending your final HS transcript. Schools do not like surprises and they need to know before hand about your D. If you do not notify the schools prior to sending your transcript, most likely you will be rescinded.

For the CSU’s, you need to contact each schools admissions office. Being proactive and doing earlier than later will help determine your options.

For the UC’s:
Freshmen: If you change schools, add or drop a course, or fail to earn a C or better in a course after you submit your application, you must notify the UC Application Center by email or postal mail. Your correspondence must include your name, UC Application ID number and your signature (if you mail a letter), and will be available to all the campuses to which you applied.

If you receive an offer of admission, be sure to confirm with the campus admission office that they are aware of the deficient grade or schedule changes. Although you must notify the campus of these changes, we cannot guarantee that a campus can go back to review an application after correspondence has been received. Make sure to save a copy of your correspondence just in case.
