D in geometry but B- In pre calculus

So, my problem is that I got a D- in geometry my freshman year (2nd semester. Sadly) and I DID attempt to retake it at a community college.
I ended up failing it again, I went in everyday and it was pretty much for the whole day getting tutoring and trying to understand but Geometry just never clicked for me. Luckily, I’ve passed my Algebra 1 class, Algebra 2 and Pre Calculus class. I passed all of these with A’s,B’s, and C’s. I’ve applied to all CSU’s since I knew I would not qualify for any UC’s because of my D in geometry. I also have a 3.3 GPA with my 10th and 11th grade years and a 1360 SAT (i know its not good). I just want to know would I still have a chance of going into college?

It says on the CSU Mentor website that you need a C or better in all the a-g required courses: “The CSU requires a minimum 15-unit pattern of courses for admission as a first-time freshman. Each unit is equal to a year of study in a subject area. A grade of C or better is required for each course you use to meet any subject requirement.”
http://www.csumentor.edu/planning/high_school/subjects.asp

However, after digging around a bit, I found that “A grade of C or better in Trigonometry or Pre-calculus validates the entire high school college preparatory requirement” for CSUs http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/csu-uc-a-g-comparison-matrix.pdf

Based on this information, you are eligible for CSU admission. Good luck!

@leilaisgr8 , of course you can still go to college. The question is which one? I hope you understand that Not doing well in one subject (geometry) doesn’t mean u won’t get any chance into UC either. It will depends on your major, your GPA is not very high for the top UCs, but maybe ok for some lower tier UCs and majors that needs prospects. Your SAT 1360 is based on 1600 or 2400? Do you have leadership, ECs, and are you considering CC first then transfer to UC? With GPA over 3.0 some CC will admit you into their honor programs, and focus on preparing you to transfer. But if you want to attend CSUs, I don’t see there will be problems with low grade in Math subjects, it will depends on what’s your preferred major. Don’t give up and doubt yourself!

I also got a D in geometry freshmen year but retook the class over the summer and got an A, I have straight A’s with 3 UC weighted honors for this semester right before first semester mid terms do I still have a shot at the UC’s or will the D hurt me

As long as you retook the class and still meet the a-g requirements, you are eligible. The UC’s use holistic admissions, meaning you’ll still have a good chance for admission, especially if you are in–state. I would recommend applying some of the less competitive campuses to make sure you get in to at least one campus. Good luck! @BucketsUCSC

For both UCs and CSUs, passing a precalculus course validates a deficient grade (D or F) in geometry. For UC, it is the omission of geometry that cannot be validated.

Fortunately, the D grade in 9th grade does not become part of your UC or CSU calculated GPA.

What campuses and majors did you apply to? If you are a California resident with a 3.3 GPA, you should be admitted to non-impacted majors at non-impacted CSU campuses. See http://www.calstate.edu/sas/impactioninfo.shtml to find out what majors and campuses are impacted. For impacted majors and/or campuses, it depends on how impacted they are.

I applied for
SFSU
CSUEB
CSUN
SSU (Sonoma)
Sacramento
SJSU
University of Nevada Reno

What major?

CSUEB is not campus impacted; its only impacted major is nursing.

All of the other CSUs you list are impacted.

SJSU lists its past thresholds by major at http://info.sjsu.edu/static/admission/impaction.html . For frosh, the thresholds are eligibility index calculated by GPA * 800 + SATCR + SATM (superscore).

my major is nursing which is unfortunately a really impacted major.

@leilaisgr8 you should calculate your eligibility index and compare that to freshman impaction for each major from last year for each school, such as the one @ucbalumnus provided. That will give you a good idea of whether you’ll be accepted.

Did you apply with an alternative non-impacted major? You have a good chance of being accepted to your second choice major if it’s not impacted.

SDSU has a calculator for EI you can use here: http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/admissions/freshmen/apply/eligibility-index.html

My eligibility index is around 3,546 so, I know i’m already in consideration for the college but my only problem is the major. My alternative major was public health, i’m not sure if it impacted or not.

You can check whether a major is impacted for each campus at http://www.calstate.edu/sas/impactionsearch/
