D in my first semester and my admission in to UCSD

Hi everyone,
I got into UCSD and am very happy.
But I had a D on AP Biology (which is fifth science in my 4-year high school; I am taking one AP science with this) with 0.1% fall from a grade of C.
It is D anyway (mean teacher!)
I sent letters to all of the UCs I applied on mid-February.
I received letters back from Merced, Riverside, and Santa Cruz with fearful introduction that they are very disappointed but still give me acceptance with a condition that I MUST show better grade.
I have not received any response to this horrible grade yet from Irvine, Santa Barbara and Davis which I got accepted into.
On Saturday, I found out that I got accepted into UCSD Sixth(with 3.68 weighted gpa lol and 28 ACT and no AP in 10th or 11th and 3 Honors and weird essay).
I am feared because I might lose my admission because I did not meet the condition which "I must pass every class with grade "C" or better".
I sent UCSD by email again today for a response to my failed grade.

I would like to hear from people who is in similar situation or had been and how to deal with it.

I've heard of people who got their admission revoked from a D, so definitely let them know about it...that's probably your best bet if you want to go to UCSD. i know someone who played it safe (he thought he was gonna get a D) and ended up going to Davis instead, only becuz of this. hope it turns out ok for u

Perhaps calling the school will elicit a better response. People on this forum can't answer for sure either because it's all circumstantial. As long as you notify them, they tend to grant leniency, but on the off chance that they somehow didn't receive your letter and you didn't call them, then you're in between a rock and a hard place. I know of a kid at my school who got a D in AP computer science. He got accepted to UCSD, but called them when this D happened. UCSD allowed him (after he begged sort of in a letter) to retake the class at a CCC for a better grade.

I know someone who got rescinded from UCSD for getting a D senior year, so definitely don't take anything for granted.

And I'm totally and completely against this 99% of the time, but if you honestly worked very very hard in that class, maybe you could try talking to your teacher? (Assuming you haven't butted heads already.)

i don't think you should have a big problem with irvine and davis, santa barbara i'm not so sure. but yeah san diego's pretty strict on this, especially since there are just so many other applicants that want to be in your spot, so you should email them again, or even call the administration office, and politely explain your situation and tell them that you will work double hard this summer and take bio again at a community college or something to prove that you're just not "lazy".

would it make a difference if it was a non academic class??

like..something like yearbook? because then it shouldn't be as huge of a scare if it was an academic class. but one should still email them about why he/she had gotten a D/F because it shows that one cares and is willing to do stuff to make it up :).

yea, if it's a non-academic class you shouldn't have to worry about it too much; however, emailing them about the situation is still a must.

I just got an email from UCSD that I need to call the office.
So worried... I will call tomorrow.

tell us how it goes...good luck!

for the ones interested on this like cr_brook,
Hi,
I just finished calling admission office of UCSD.
I am not definitely in good condition of the admission.
The officer first requires me to:
1. get c or better in the 2nd semester
2. get 3 or better in the AP test.
The officer requiers me to do BOTH (if not then the admission revoked)
Also the officer suggested me to think other options since she told me that she has seen many with D not getting 3 or higher on the AP test.
I think this case is just for the AP class.
i also told her that there was no way to make up the course at community college course. The high school counselor tells me that there is no make up course for this at community college.

So until May 1, I will definitely STUDY AP BIOLOGY vigorously to achieve at least 3.
Still there is hope but I am cut off if I do not receive 3 or higher.

Thanks to everyone who took interest and post messages!

hey aero, i also got a D in ap spanish and it seems like i'm screwed as much as you are. can you tell me what your 1 semester gpa unweighted and weighted was? i got 2.83 unweighted first semester and its looking REAL hard for me to get a 3.17 this semester to average my senior gpa to 3.0 unweighted.

i'm pretty sure for ucsd you don't need an unweighted 3.0, you need a weighted 3.0 in a-g courses

and aerotreasure thanks for the update and good luck with the studying!

^ it is weighted

I received email from UCSD officer with the following words :
"You must meet your admission provision of a weighted 3.0 gpa and NO grade lower than a C in your senior year, or your admission may be rescinded. This is the case whether your AP Biology course was taken in addition to your 2 required lab science courses. Passing the AP Bio exam does not necessarily mean that your admission will not be affected.
We will not be able to inform you about any changes in your admission status until we receive the final, official high school transcript (by July 15th). Please note that this AFTER the May 1st SIR deadline."

I guess it means passing AP might not help at all.

I think all it means is that they are requiring you to maintain your GPA at a minimum weighted 3.0, pull your grade up to a C and pass the AP test. Is there anyone at your school or in your neighborhood who could tutor you? Do you have any friends in the class who are doing well? Maybe you could review all of your class notes with them. Also go to the library and check out an AP Biology practice book. Read it cover to cover and do all the practice tests. Start now and completely review a chapter of your text book every night. Take Cornell notes or make index flash cards to study with. Talk with your teacher to see if he has any other suggestions.

Good luck we are all rooting for you! :)

collegemom, the point was he already GOT a D...so there's no fixing that now

hey what if... you're taking ap physics and you already fulfilled the a-g requirements without taking ap physics... but more than half of the class is failing, including yourself? should i still email them? i mean, i got a C last semester but... this semester seems IMPOSSIBLE. and what sucks even more is that i'm seriously TRYING to raise up that grade, but it just keeps going down.

Similar question: I had all As first semester? my unweighted gpa is 3.83 (5 honors this year, school doesn't weigh). I'm in some risk of getting a D in one of my classes. Considering the A first semester, is that still a big deal?

yeah, unfortunately it is...it doesn't mean you will get rescinded for sure, but there's a good chance
