I got a D in precalc and I am in California. I got a C first semester and a D second semester. Im a junior in high school and I want to know if I have to retake it at a community college because I’m taking AP Calculus AB next year and does taking AP calculus ‘cover’ that? If I score a 4 or 5 on the AP exam, will I have to retake it?
UC application information for Freshman:
Repeated courses
A student is allowed to repeat each “a-g” course in which a D or F grade was originally earned as many times as necessary until the First time they earn a letter grade of C or better. The follow- ing rules apply:
• The replacement (repeat) course must have curriculum similar to the original course (the same content but not necessarily the same title).
• The new grade earned will be used in the GPA calculation. UC does not average the grades.
• All “a-g” coursework (original and repeats) must be reported on the admission application.
• A regular college-prep course cannot be used as a repeat of an approved honors-level course.
• An approved honors-level course may be used as a repeat of a college-prep course.
• College-level courses of high school content (remedial) may be used to repeat a college-prep course.
• College-level courses that are UC-transferable may be used to repeat approved school-created honors, AP and IB courses.
You are asking two things:
- If you take AP Calculus AB next year and get a C or higher, it will validate the D in Pre-Calculus.
- Validating a course does not replace the D grade, so if you do not want the D used in your CSU or UC GPA, you need to repeat the Pre-Calc course.
- If the Pre-Calc course is an Honors level course, you need to take the exact same course over or you can take a Community college course during the summer to replace the grade.
- If you are applying to a Cal state, you will report the repeat grade but for the UC’s. you need to report both grades even though the repeat grade will be used in the GPA calculation.
- Scoring a 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam does not replace that D grade.
So I won’t have to take pre calculus when I go to a community college provided I get a C in AP Calculus or score a 3 4 5 on the exam?
