D starting college search --seeking input on Goucher

My D1 is a soph this year, but we are just starting to look at potential colleges for her. Planning to visit Goucher this spring.

I would love to get some feedback from those that have applied to Goucher, or are newly accepted/attending fall '11. Why did you choose Goucher? What impressions can you share?

Here's some info. on my daughter:
-plans to major in studio art
-hoping to double major or at least minor in asian studies or Japanese if they offer it (have found few schools that do..grrrr). school has to have strong abroad program (this is why she first started looking at Goucher)
-very liberal and has attended a public magnet that specializes in theatre and art.
-her gpa is around a 3.2 and it may or may not go up when she starts taking AP's next year.
-based on PSAT's, expect her SAT's to be around 1800.
-here's the tricky part, she has some ADD issues and I am hoping for an accepting climate. this is much of the reason she is looking at smaller LAC's (and more liberal).

thanks for any input!

Our girls seem very similar–same GPA, SAT scores (Goucher is test optional but she sent hers), studio art major and has ADHD-IT. She was not diagnosed until her sophomore year, but switched schools and really did well these last two years. Despite the rocky record, she was just accepted as an early action applicant for Fall 2011.

Her initial interest was the smaller size, urban setting and opportunities to study abroad. Her first visit was last summer and there was not much activity. Still, she very much liked the campus itself, which is like a woodland oasis but walking distance to civilization. She also liked the art studio space and lighting. She plans on an overnight visit next month and will hopefully get a better feel for the population.

Although their website [Home > Student Services > Academic Support > Disability Support] states there is no formal program for support, they do have a support center and allow accommodations. I have also met a previous graduate with LD who did well there. Plus, the smaller class sizes and how friendly and familiar I hear the professors are with all the students make me think it would be a great learning environment.

I’ll let you know if I learn anything new. Best of luck in your search!

Thank you! This is really helpful and I am very encouraged to hear there is support available and the studio space sounds fantastic. I think we’ll plan on a spring time visit, so that she gets a better feel for the campus while the students are there. We are only an hour away in the DC burbs :).

My son is a second year student with ADD. He loves Goucher! They did require that he get retested before he was granted accomodations; his documentation was more than 3 years old. That actually was helpful, as it pinpointed his disability. At the beginning of each semester, he signs paperwork at A.C.E (Academic Center for Excellence) that informs his professors of his status. He then takes his exams in a separate room at A.C.E. He is doing very well! He feels that professors are quite happy to help. As Pixelitist says, the small class size is great. We visited several times; Discover Goucher Day, which was in April of his Junior year of H.S. He had an overnight visit and interview and then finally, Accepted Applicant Day. Goucher was his top choice from the beginning. He is also a liberal artsy type. It descibes many in the student body. Good luck!
