D

Hey, I took AP Biology with no prerequisites recommended by the College Board because it was the only AP offered to magnet 10th graders; anyways I got a ‘D’ one semester. With this mar on my career even if I finished with a 3.8+ unweighted GPA are my chances gone at most "good" schools? I really want to get into Claremont McKenna, do they discount you if you've received a D? This is assuming my area of study in college will have nothing to do with science.

Thanks

you should talk to one of the adcoms about this...although he/she may give you a convoluted answer, you should be able to figure out if the overall GPA makes up for the D.

D..in a AP course, it could hurt you a bit.

how bout a C? Does That Hurt you?

Although the D will undoubtedly stand out, it's well within the scope of possibility for you to compensate for it.

Since the D was for AP Biology, prove to the admissions committee that either Biology isn't your thing (which seems to be the case, because you said you weren't going into science) and that you excel in some other field, or that you can actually understand Biology and that that semester was a fluke - a big one, granted, but a fluke nonetheless. I don't know much about Claremont McKenna in particular, but you will probably have the chance on the application to briefly explain anything you want to bring to attention. On the other hand, it's hard to say whether it's better to try to bring as little attention to the D as possible or if it's better to try to explain...

In any case, if the rest of your application can show that you deserve to be at a school of that caliber, the D should be, at worst, a minor setback.

see this is what is unfair about school. Our school, the prerequisite for AP biology is getting A/A in biology and getting 3.8 GPA AND pass a qualifying essay and multiple choice exam. but other people's school, there are hardly any prerequisites. this is totally unfair.

Yeah, my dad actually went to the school about that fact, plus it's the only AP offered in 10th grade to HUMANITIES students, we can't take like AP lit or AP world in 10th; so in short I got it changed to a C with the possibility of an A if I get a 4 on the AP with independant study, thanks for the reply
