D2 offer, others want official visits

Any advice for kid - he get a great offer at a school that he can totally see himself at (but it is far enough away that he will no nobody and won’t be able to come home). Coach wants answer within the next few weeks. Meanwhile, 2 other schools (same division) want him out for official visits mid Jan. One has verbally told him he’s their top choice. But no offer and no idea on money. Does he try to push risking loosing offer to see what the other 2 offers are … or does he just go with the one that has shown him they want him both in action and in money.

Is it a full scholarship offer ? If so, and your son likes the school, then a bird in the hand is worth two in January.

Sometimes you have to roll the dice. You can ask the two schools he hasn’t visited yet what their offers will be. Sometimes they can tell you, sometimes they can’. Be honest and tell them he’s very interested but this other school has to have an answer NOW. They’ll understand.

But it may come down to just taking your chances that the current offer may be withdrawn if you wait for the two visits.

Going far away does make it difficult. My daughter was 2000 miles away and I could watch her games online, but I could only go once a year. Almost all the other parents went to every game.

It is very very close and after next year should be full.

Yes - we hate that we won’t be able to watch him play much although a few road games might be closer to home. He was honest with the other coaches yesterday. Both said January but we are waiting to see if they come back sooner. Kinda makes me think that while they want him they may not make as good of an offer. School #1 is ranked higher but all 3 would be great and the other 2 are closer.

Higher ranking (academic?) plus a coach that really wants him is very appealing!

If it were me, I would go with the offer in hand. It’s hard having kids far away (I have one who is 500 miles away and one who is 5,300 miles away!), but it sounds like a great school and an amazing financial offer.

Which school would he want to be at if he could no longer compete?

Right now he loves the school with the offe//r. However, both the other coaches keep reaching out to him (and the local one has visited him at school twice in the last week). He has had unofficial visit at the local school. They tell him he is their #1, but no offer yet. School #3 is out of state and new to our radar. It looks promising, but again haven’t ever been there. I think that is why he is torn. He loves the first school and if really pressed would probably commit there, but feels like he owes it to himself to at least visit the other 2 schools and see them before making such a big decision. However, he doesn’t know if first school will give him the time to do that because the other 2 schools visits are the later part of Jan ans signing is first of Feb.

He does NOT need to sign the first of Feb. In fact, he never needs to sign. Some of the top D1 players do not sign a NLI and just accept the offer and go to school.

That said, it is fun to sign and be with the group but it is only fun if you really know that’s where you want to go. I asked my daughter’s coach what was the benefit of signing in the early signing period (for her that was Nov) and the coach honestly told me there would be no more money in April and no less money in April, but signing in Nov made it a done deal. She was so right as my daughter was they type who would never make a decision and always keep looking for something better. She signed in Nov and it was really nice to have it over with. And it all worked out.

Thanks guys! Ultimately, after a lot of thought and conversations with all the coaches he felt like this offer was a great one academically, athletically and that they are very excited to have him. The fit felt good. He went ahead and accepted verbally this week. We assume he will sign in February. Excited for him.

Congratulations!

That is what he ultimately decided. The school is excited to have him and he is excited to be there. It’s D2 so he has a great scholarship combination of athletic and academics and is relieved to have made a decision!

Congrats. I’m a big fan of D2 because of the combo of athletic aid and merit aid available, and because there is usually less travel involved.
