DAAP Decisions

To previous DAAP students who applied for Industrial Design,

Do you guys happen to know the date that you received your decisions after the December 1st deadline? I'm just wondering approximately when I can expect my own decision. I know the website says by January 12th, but I know many colleges that release decisions much earlier than the final date. Thank you!!

Hi Dancer213,
Thank you for applying to DAAP’s Industrial Design program.

Regarding decision notification:
(from the DAAP website) For the 2014-2015 academic year…Applicants should be informed of an admissions decision prior by February 1, 2014. Applicants received after the deadline maybe reviewed if space is available. If you have questions regarding the admissions process, please contact the UC Office of Admissions at 513-556-1100 and ask to speak to a DAAP admissions representative.

Best Regards,

Is that you Bearcat?

Thank you for letting me know!

Im a DAAP Industrial Design freshman. I got my acceptance letter on january 15th, so you should probably hear from UC around then.

Nestabrook, I’m hoping you see this. You’re a great resource for new admits to UC and DAAP. Would you mind answering a few questions regarding housing, dining, courseload and few other things? If you’d spend a little time answering various threads here over your break, that would be great. Just let me know and I’ll start a new thread or two.

Thanks.

Son just got accepted into the Industrial Design program. He is so excited.

MThreeS, Congratulations to your son! My oldest son graduates from DAAP ID this year and my youngest has also applied for 2014. May I ask how your son was notified? By mail? Email? MyStatus page?

He checked his MyStatus page. Good luck to your child.
It was a huge relief as this was his first acceptance. Now we have to go visit the school as we are OOS. What did your son think of the program and UC in general?

MThreeS, congratulations on your son’s acceptance. You don’t specify what state you’re from, but I think the University of Cincinnati DAAP has a lot going for it, aside from the fact that it leads in the rankings for ID. First, it’s a full research university with a diversity of students that you just won’t see at an Art school, like SCAD, Pratt and RISD (although RISD is right next to Brown). Second, three semesters of Co-Ops are built into the program meaning your son will have a diploma from a top ID program, and 1.5 years of experience under his belt when he graduates. Third, the campus is compact, beautiful, and in a thriving city. They say you can make it between any classes, within 10 minutes. And lastly, the cost of attendance is quite reasonable even at the out of state rate when compared to the sticker price of some of the aforementioned Art-only schools.

Having said all of the above, if you’re not from at least a medium-sized city, the urban setting of the university might give you some pause. My daughter and I are from Chicago, and are used to both the benefits and cautions of being located in a bustling city environment. Some of the neighborhoods around the university campus are not the best, nor are they ghettos. When travelling off campus, you need to be alert to your surroundings, and travel in groups at night. You have very little to worry about during the day in the immediate, off campus shops and businesses. On campus and in the area around campus, the university police are a constant presence. Where you can run into problems is later at night, and while travelling alone. So, don’t do that. If you find yourself in a situation like that, the university has a program where you can get picked up and driven to your dorm.

Also, the campus is located on top of some rolling hills. This both adds to the beauty of the campus, as well as this dad’s lower back pain when you’re traipsing up and down various ramps and staircases around campus. The buildings themselves allow students to navigate from dorms to classes indoors for at least half the trip and back. When you go to visit, I’d go during the week when classes are in session, and call DAAP ID and see whether your son might be allowed to shadow a freshman/sophomore design studio while you take a tour of the campus and sit through the regularly scheduled admissions orientation sessions. My daughter sat through two classes, met some very helpful students, and that cemented her decision of UC as her top choice. I’ve found the college and admissions staff to be very helpful and enthusiastic about what their school offers to students, so just call and ask if shadowing might be possible.

As for the dorms that your freshman is likely to get into, Daniels has two DAAP floors where he can dorm with other DAAP students in a traditional multiple occupancy room (a few singles exist) and a bathroom down the hall. Late night trips at design studio and back to the dorm with others working late (they work you very hard) at DAAP is a big plus. The other likely dorm for a DAAP student presence would be Stratford Heights which is located across Clifton (off the main campus), but in an area with many of the Greek Chapter houses.

Lastly, if driving, you can park your car in an on-campus parking garage. If spending the night, I would recommend the Hampton Inn which is located 2 blocks from campus and within walking distance.

My daughter was admitted to the DAAP Interior Design program, and is looking forward to attending in the Fall, as she is “so” over high school, and looking forward to starting the next chapter in her life. For us, being from Chicago, the Megabus stops right on campus 100 yards from Daniels, and drops her off 5.5 hours later in downtown Chicago, 20 minutes from her front door. Let me know whether you need any other information. We’ve visited DAAP, Pratt and SCAD during her college search. Hope this helps. Good luck to your son.

Thank you for letting me know MThreeS. My son’s My Status page still has the “your file is now complete and ready for review” message. He will be bummed if he isn’t accepted.

My oldest son has absolutely loved the ID program at DAAP. His co-ops have given him some incredible experiences and his most recent one offered him a job when he graduates. He will be working in a consultancy in Providence. We are from Colorado, so I wish his job was closer to home…but at least he has one! He was also able to do one semester of study abroad in S. Korea. He really enjoyed that. Some of his classmates went to Germany and other places.

I would echo Balthezar’s comments above regarding the campus itself…beautiful on campus, but be careful at night off campus. My son thinks we are over concerned about that though. The student’s in the DAAP ID program become one big family, so they look out for each other and walk home together, etc. They are extremely busy, but they all seem to really enjoy what they are doing. My son just posted their Senior photo and many of the students posted comments that they are sad that their time together is coming to an end.

Definitely go visit before making any decisions. But don’t let first impressions of the surrounding area influence you too much. It is an amazing program!

Congrats again! And good luck to your son.

My son is a soph DAAP ID student…currently the curriculum that is in place requires 5 semesters of co-op.

Yep, it’s 5 semesters. I have no idea where I got 3 semesters from. It works out to about a year and a half of experience, however. Anyway, collegeparents, I’ve got 3 in college as of next fall, this being my youngest. If you don’t mind, can I PM you? I’ve got a few questions about UC, that you might be able to help with.

Balthezar…sure, go ahead and PM. I’ll try to help in any way that I can. I had 4 kids in college at the same time…now it’s down to 3.

Has anyone else been accepted/denied to DAAP Industrial Design for 2014? My son is still waiting to hear, but his My Status page still says …“your file is now complete and ready for review”. I know the ID page says results will be out by Feb 1, but it sounds like some have already been accepted.

UC Admissions has a twitter feed and I’m still seeing “Just accepted in DAAP ID” posts as of yesterday, so they seem to still be in the midst of the decision process.

Thank you Balthezar. I’ll take a look at the twitter feed.

My son was accepted to UC DAAP Industrial Design! His My Status page was updated this morning. Good luck to others that are still waiting to hear. His UW GPA is 3.6 and ACT 30.

Congrats to both you and your son!

Congrats to your son! We are heading out to visit UC in late March to check out the campus and tour the facilities so he can get a better feel for what it might be like to go there.
