MThreeS, congratulations on your son’s acceptance. You don’t specify what state you’re from, but I think the University of Cincinnati DAAP has a lot going for it, aside from the fact that it leads in the rankings for ID. First, it’s a full research university with a diversity of students that you just won’t see at an Art school, like SCAD, Pratt and RISD (although RISD is right next to Brown). Second, three semesters of Co-Ops are built into the program meaning your son will have a diploma from a top ID program, and 1.5 years of experience under his belt when he graduates. Third, the campus is compact, beautiful, and in a thriving city. They say you can make it between any classes, within 10 minutes. And lastly, the cost of attendance is quite reasonable even at the out of state rate when compared to the sticker price of some of the aforementioned Art-only schools.

Having said all of the above, if you’re not from at least a medium-sized city, the urban setting of the university might give you some pause. My daughter and I are from Chicago, and are used to both the benefits and cautions of being located in a bustling city environment. Some of the neighborhoods around the university campus are not the best, nor are they ghettos. When travelling off campus, you need to be alert to your surroundings, and travel in groups at night. You have very little to worry about during the day in the immediate, off campus shops and businesses. On campus and in the area around campus, the university police are a constant presence. Where you can run into problems is later at night, and while travelling alone. So, don’t do that. If you find yourself in a situation like that, the university has a program where you can get picked up and driven to your dorm.

Also, the campus is located on top of some rolling hills. This both adds to the beauty of the campus, as well as this dad’s lower back pain when you’re traipsing up and down various ramps and staircases around campus. The buildings themselves allow students to navigate from dorms to classes indoors for at least half the trip and back. When you go to visit, I’d go during the week when classes are in session, and call DAAP ID and see whether your son might be allowed to shadow a freshman/sophomore design studio while you take a tour of the campus and sit through the regularly scheduled admissions orientation sessions. My daughter sat through two classes, met some very helpful students, and that cemented her decision of UC as her top choice. I’ve found the college and admissions staff to be very helpful and enthusiastic about what their school offers to students, so just call and ask if shadowing might be possible.

As for the dorms that your freshman is likely to get into, Daniels has two DAAP floors where he can dorm with other DAAP students in a traditional multiple occupancy room (a few singles exist) and a bathroom down the hall. Late night trips at design studio and back to the dorm with others working late (they work you very hard) at DAAP is a big plus. The other likely dorm for a DAAP student presence would be Stratford Heights which is located across Clifton (off the main campus), but in an area with many of the Greek Chapter houses.

Lastly, if driving, you can park your car in an on-campus parking garage. If spending the night, I would recommend the Hampton Inn which is located 2 blocks from campus and within walking distance.

My daughter was admitted to the DAAP Interior Design program, and is looking forward to attending in the Fall, as she is “so” over high school, and looking forward to starting the next chapter in her life. For us, being from Chicago, the Megabus stops right on campus 100 yards from Daniels, and drops her off 5.5 hours later in downtown Chicago, 20 minutes from her front door. Let me know whether you need any other information. We’ve visited DAAP, Pratt and SCAD during her college search. Hope this helps. Good luck to your son.
