DAAP Interior Design

My D is interested in interior design and is interested in the program here. Does anyone have someone in that program and can you share anything about it? How hard is it to get into the program? My D is going into her Junior year of HS so just starting to explore schools. She has a solid GPA but doesn’t take the SAT until August and she is not a good test taker so we are getting her a tutor but trying to figure out what the target is for her to have a shot of getting in.

We are going over this weekend to just walk around and see the University but not an official tour, just getting a feel for it.

Still looking for any feedback but did want to provide an update on our visit for anyone considering Cincinnati. We went over on Saturday and spent a few hours walking around. We stopped at the DAAP and spent quite a bit of time walking around, the building was open and there were a few students in the studio’s working so we were able to walk in and see the setting. Was surprised by the amount of space in DAAP. Was’t expecting so many studio’s and work spaces.

As for the University as a whole, I wasn’t expecting just how hilly the campus is. It seemed like we were consistently walking either up or down hills and stairs. The campus is fairly compact but still has more green space than we thought it would. There are plenty of restaurants and even a Target right across the street from the South side of campus. It felt like a more modern campus from the look and feel compared to where my other D goes at IU.

We plan to take an official visit in the fall and try to meet with the DAAP school then. This visit was more to see if my D would like the setting of the campus since it is an Urban campus.

DAAP Interior Design is a competitive, nationally highly ranked program. This page shows the stats of the middle 50% of applicants admitted to the program.

My daughter is a Senior, has had a study abroad semester, and over a year of co-op experience including an international co-op in Montreal. The Co-op program at UC is second to none, and a huge selling point for UC. It is integrated into the program with required classes, and an entire Professional Practice division devoted to both instructing the students on the state of Interior Design, as well as nurturing relationships with companies that see the value that the students provide to their firms. It is an Urban campus, and it has its share of homeless just off campus, but my daughter has never felt threatened in any way. The university police are omnipresent, and the area around campus is very safe. Reasonable precautions should always be taken. Travel in groups, use the nightride, if needed. The campus is hilly, but the kids barely notice. I, on the other hand, do. Target and a new Kroger are just off campus. I highly recommend the program. Good luck to your daughter in her college search.

Thanks for the information. We just got my D a tutor to help her prepare for the SAT in August so we will see how it goes. There are a few other programs we are looking at as well but I think she likes this one the best but all that could change. We will do an official tour and visit in the Fall and sign up for a meeting with DAAP. For now we just did a visit on our own and walked around to even see if she would like the urban setting. We didn’t want to waste effort if she wasn’t really interested but she seemed to enjoy the campus and area.

I am very interested in the whole Co-op aspect of UC and is a big reason why I think my D is also really interested in the school and program.

I forgot to mention yesterday, that DAAPcamp is a great way to get a feel for the program and the school. Many current DAAP students attended DAAPcamp first, and it sealed the deal for us. She also, however, had considered RISD, SCAD, and Pratt by the way.

My daughter will be starting her second year in Interior Design. I agree with Balthezar- DAAP Camp was a huge factor in her choosing UC. She attended the summer after her sophomore year but most of the students were a year older. This camp is well worth the $- it is very representative of real life at DAAP. She absolutely loves UC. DAAP is intense and requires many hours in the studio. The first 3 semesters combines the architecture and ID students in all classes. They are divided into sections and these students become a very close-knit group. She has friends outside of DAAP as well. She has designed her portfolio and will begin the process of co-op placement this fall for her first co-op will begin in January. The program is very hands-on: woodshop, field trips, etc.

She considered Miami of Ohio- she really liked their program as well.

It is a fun exciting time. Enjoy!

So glad to hear that DAAP camp is worthwhile! My D18 is starting in Indus Design this year. My D22 is interested in a creative career as well so I was thinking about sending her to DAAP camp the summer after her sophomore year which would coincide with the summer that my D18 would be on campus. I’ll have to look for the link to it.
