I ask ahead of time that you please forgive me, as I am fairly certain this question has been asked before. probably multiple times. HOWEVER;

I am hoping to transfer to Barnard next fall. My dad went to Columbia undergrad and grad. Am I a Legacy? If I am not techinically a legacy, in what capacity do you think it would affect my admissions that my dad went to Columbia?

I am fairly certain that, since Barnard and Columbia admissions are entirely separate, that you would not be considered a "legacy". However, I suppose that if you somehow worked your dad's positive experiences at the school into your application, this could serve to reinforce the notion that you really "belong" at Barnard.
That being said, the most important consideration for your transferring would be your record at the college you presently attend.

I wouldn't bring Columbia into it...they don't seem to like seeing people apply to Barnard to gain access to Columbia, and even if you honestly don't mean that, you may come off that way.

You could tell them - just make it clear you want to go to BARNARD, a lot...

Good point, Marta. I certainly do NOT think the op should indicate that she wants Barnard purely for the "Columbia" factor, though that is of significance to the Barnard experience.
I think it might be cool to intimate the opposite situation, though: that her Dad's legacy status for Columbia led her to look there...and she found Barnard and realized it was a much better fit for her than CC, perhaps. Could be an interesting way to highlight all the things that Barnard has to offer over Columbia. She would have to be careful, though, not to make it sound as if she is wanting Barnard in order to gain access to Columbia. You are absolutely correct about that!
