Dad wants me to live at home & take BART to UC Berkeley every day

You're going to college to GO to college. The dorm experience is usually an integral part of that first year. Live in the dorms and have a wonderful experience at Cal.

This is coming from a "Mom" who desperately missed her D when she went to college (and lived in the dorms) 2 years ago and will REALLY miss S this fall when he leaves H and me at home as "empty nesters". I know that growing up and separating from the 'rents is what they both need to do. I would never take that experience away from them.

To wis75: Only "parent care" relates to your point, and even for adultness, somebody would rather choose to phase-in earlier or later. My son chose dorm the first year, but I unserstand people are different. You may add weight "+++" to, for example, "college life" or "independence" as well. Nothing wrong here.

I think a lot of young adults find it uncomfortable living at home with their parents at a time when they feel they shouldn't have to report on their whereabouts at all times, keep quiet, etc.
