<p>You're going to college to GO to college. The dorm experience is usually an integral part of that first year. Live in the dorms and have a wonderful experience at Cal.</p>
<p>This is coming from a "Mom" who desperately missed her D when she went to college (and lived in the dorms) 2 years ago and will REALLY miss S this fall when he leaves H and me at home as "empty nesters". I know that growing up and separating from the 'rents is what they both need to do. I would never take that experience away from them.</p>
<p>To wis75: Only "parent care" relates to your point, and even for adultness, somebody would rather choose to phase-in earlier or later. My son chose dorm the first year, but I unserstand people are different. You may add weight "+++" to, for example, "college life" or "independence" as well. Nothing wrong here.</p>
<p>I think a lot of young adults find it uncomfortable living at home with their parents at a time when they feel they shouldn't have to report on their whereabouts at all times, keep quiet, etc.</p>
