Daily Bruin Evaluates Fall 2007 Holistic Admissions

The diversity of the incoming class has decreased. Correlation = Causation?

The Daily Bruin - Admissions statistics illuminate trend

Some underrepresented groups saw increased enrollment for fall 2007 – the number of black and Latino freshman jumped from 241 in 2006 to 389 in 2007. But other groups, such as students from low-income families and first-generation college students, saw enrollment declines.

Diversity in terms of the latter statement?

That's unfortunate.

Class of 2011, first to undergo holistic review, has fewer students, slightly higher GPA

Ya...real bummer

Janina Montero, vice chancellor for student affairs, said admissions officials opted to hold down the size of the freshman class because the university in general is slightly overenrolled.

Slightly?!? The more realistic term is grossly (and to add insult to injury, there are second year students with junior standing and even sophomore standing with earlier sign up times than fourth years with senior standing- they seriously need to revamp their decrepit and defunct computer generating systems, or find/generate new breeds of monkeys to determine sign up times since anything is better than their current POS system)

i am a fan of the current credit system if we took 9000 ap's we deserve our senior standing as a sophmore.
secondly some with high standing graduate in 3 years so we need the enrollment benefits

want to elaborate?

He means that there's an weird priority system regarding upperclassmen vs. first/second-year students in terms of units, standing, and then enrollment appointment times. It makes no sense for sophomores with excess units enroll earlier than seniors who need to graduate promptly. So, he uses the idea of monkeys and POS(s) to describe the system. In the midst of his annoyance, he called you an idiot.

What I'm saying is that the system is a POS because there are instances like second years with JUNIOR standing that are getting earlier enrollment time than fourth years with SENIOR standing

^Yeah I hate the special treatment for AAP and such. Thank God I'm in SEAS or I'd be p/oed.

SEAS ftw! I must find a MW GE for winter.. since i don't want to be murdered by Rohr

What I am saying is sophmores with junior standing deserve to beat out juniors/ We earned it through AP's and extra classes. And if it ****es you off more I am a sophmore with senior standing.

I think what is being said here is that the system is unfair when a sophomore with junior standing can have earlier sign up times than an actual 4th year senior.

Juniors beating juniors isn't an issue. Furthermore, I don't believe that a sophomore with junior standing "deserves" to beat out other juniors. It just puts them at the same playing ground as other juniors.

Lol Deuces same here! I'd rather go to extension school to do CS seeing as how my friends in the class don't exactly enjoy his teaching. Anyways, I don't see a significant issue with juniors beating out seniors. I would assume that, at that level of college, you'd probably be working on your upper div classes, which I'd imagine juniors take different classes as opposed to seniors anyways.

I apologize for going too fast for some people. Let me simplify it even more: ignore the student's year. For a school that claims that its enrollment status is based on class standing (total number of units... yes including AP), the system is fundamentally flawed when a sophomore standing person is getting an earlier enrollment time than one with senior standing (that is, one with less total units, college + cc + AP all accounted for getting an earlier sign up time than one with more total units, everything accounted for again)

People I've asked have gotten times in their appropriate category.
UCLA Schedule of Classes: Enrollment Appointments

I haven't heard of anyone who's gotten an enrollment time they shouldn't have.

Oh I should have said this was regarding priority enrollment
