If someone here would please help me answer a question i would greatly appreicate it.
Well heres my problem... i am a damn liberal pot smoking hippie...yes yes the whole 9 yards, since 8th grade ive been wearing phish shirts....wearing lots of jewelry, dreading my hair, and smoking pounds and pounds of pot.....the average thought of these kids you guys call " damn hippies" are probably the stupid kids who skip school to smoke..
But this is the problem.....while on the outside i have this liberal outake on life, inside i am a huge dork. i study alot and have good stats. My GPA this marking period was a 4.3 and the average of highschool is around a 3.8 ( I'm a Junior )....my friends are obviously not like this at all and are struggling to push a 2.0. So is there any college at there that i will fit into?
I can't stand haning with preps too much and just want to go to a college with people like me. i understnad there will be all people everywhere no matter where i go... but i would love a good liberal population. Any ideas
Ive been thinking of these schools.....
Colgate
Northwestern
NYU
Tufts
Hamilton
Anyways, do i have a chance....or will i be an outcast everywhere i go....please help me out...thanks again for the help

Tufts likes its hippies, and its pot as well. I'm surprised how such a large proportion of the students here have tried marijuana. Granted I don't smoke and there's definitely no pressure (though I'm curious as to how people can afford to be so friendly to offer every student that comes through the dorm room a joint) to do anything of the sort. Things are chill here.

Brown? i dunno thats what i have heard

Ok so you say you're a pot-smoking dork. That's cool, but we need more details. Do you consider yourself an intellectual? Are you a slacker who happens to be smart? I have no clue, so don't take offense! :)

Reed maybe?

You need to put away the hash pipe for a weekend or two and curl up with Fiske Guide to Colleges, paying attention to the comments about school cultures. A couple of the colleges on your list are the complete opposite of what you are looking for. For example, Northwestern is one of the most preppy, pre-professional schools in the country. UChicago would be the geek school in Chitown.

Likewise, Hamilton is going to be largey a preppy, drinking scene as well. Probably Colgate, too...but I really don't know the school that well.

I think you can probably find schools where Phish is more popular.

Hampshire College, at least that's my impression (I go to a nearby college). However, most liberal arts colleges are pretty liberal, and even the small preppy ones have their hippy groups.

Lots of smart hippies at Swarthmore, Oberlin, Wesleyan and Vassar. All four schools are filled with intelligent students and are similar in admissions, academic quality and reputations for jobs and grad and professional schools.

Reeeeeeeeeeed.

To be honest, I think you will be an outcast whereever you go. You should stay home. Don't expose anyone else to your lifestyle. Do higher education a favor.

Oh, the irony...

While I'm sure this probably describes a sizeable number of Hamilton students, there's definitely a hippie, pot-smoking contingent as well. My d has several friends there and has visited a number of times. I think the OP wouldn't have much trouble finding his niche there. Colgate is another story - definitely preppier and more alcohol-centered, in our observation.

Bard is very small but lots of liberal kids there ...

OP, I think you need to refine what you're looking for beyond the pot and political atmosphere. It would be hard to find two schools more different than NYU and Hamilton.

The two kids that my S knows who go to Swarthmore sound exactly like you!

Reed could be a good fit.

Uhmmm.... all the anti-polo collar popping, liberal pot smoking, Phish loving, above average intelligence kids I've "heard" of head for Boulder. (University of Colorado) and other Rocky Mountain high unis and colleges.....although I would heartily endorse Reed..maybe Oberlin, too.

Cal :D
