we are in the same boat over here. All academic applications done but still quite a few audition videos to make. Good luck!

videos videos videos…plus zooming. We are working on finishing up the artistic submissions. How many schools are you applying to? Have taken a few great schools off the list in order to get all the submissions finished.

Wow! Sounds like many of you have lots done already. About half of the academic and artistic apps done… Still working on half and hoping to be all done by January 1. Best of luck to everyone!

Would love some insight on how long the application process has taken for others. My daughter is a Junior in high school this year at a performing arts school and wanting to major in dance for college.

We are still in the thick of it. Some schools require more than others. In addition to the academic application to the school, there is usually a dance supplement to complete (usually includes more writing), pre-screen/audition videos to create and submit, a dance resume, photos. Many school require different things in their video, so we have spent many days in the studio trying to get everything recorded. It is a long process, but I believe it will be worth it in the end.

Hey everyone. Below are the schools that D21 has applied to or is in the process of applying to, however, she was already accepted into one of her top choice programs, so we are considering taking some of the following off of the list. Does anyone have any knowledge of the following programs - not being able to visit the schools has made it more difficult to make really well-informed decisions. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. She is a well-rounded dancer whose strength is contemporary and is hoping to one day join a contemporary company and possibly teach/choreograph. Thanks.

CSU Long Beach
CSU Fullerton
UC Irvine
SUNY Purchase
Marymount Manhattan
SMU
Loyola Marymount
Ohio State

Others still on the for sure list are:
USC
NYU
Chapman

Thank you!

My dd applied to and was very interested in Ohio State, but took it off her list when she realized that dance majors only take 2 ballet classes and 3 modern classes each week (this is more common in Dance BFA programs than you might think!).

Depending on what your daughter is looking for, Marymount Manhattan is VERY urban. No campus. This was a ultimately a dealbreaker for my dd.

Have you looked at Montclair State? That’s where my dd is now a student and seems like it might fit in well with her goals and the other schools she’s looking at.

Also, if you are on the large social media site that starts with F, there is a group there called Dance Parents: College Edition that you might find helpful.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Your daughter’s concern with Ohio State is also one of my D21’s concerns. She actually has an acceptance to the dance program at Montclair state through the NYCDA audition, but hasn’t applied for academic admission. She was recently accepted to University of Arizona and I think it is higher on her list at this point… but I have heard so many great things about the program at Montclair that it would definitely be worth her taking a closer look at. I think Marymount Manhattan was on the cut list, so your comments will probably help to be the deciding factor on that one. Again, thank you so much! I really appreciate your taking the time to comment.

Here’s a link to the Montclair fall dance concert!

@dancemamajh My daughter is a sophomore BFA Dance major at SUNY-Purchase. I’d be glad to answer any questions you might have🙂 She knew she wanted to be on the East coast (we are from the Midwest), and it came down to choosing between Point Park, Purchase, and Montclair. She also visited Rutgers, Marymount, and UArts but didn’t end up applying to them. Just let us know if you have any questions!

My daughter is a sophomore dance major at Loyola Marymount. The program is a BA, not a BFA, so most majors have added a double major easily or a minor or 2. The department switched chairs last year, so there is a transition in the program going on to make it more up-to-date, which is a good thing. The school is completely online this year, which is rough for dancers, but should be more back to normal in the fall. Let me know if you have other questions I can attempt to answer!

Jumping in late here but has anyone heard back from programs like Indiana or butler or scholarship offered?

Butler letters went out a while ago, late November or December. Mine didn’t apply, but her friends have. between merit and talent, they are all looking at a $30,000 out of pocket cost overall. My DD heard back from Indiana which she didn’t get in (she is 5’8’ and trained Vaganova and Cecchetti, not the desired Balanchine). It was expected. She did attend a summer intensive with them. They told us their ballet majors get approx. $20,000 in scholarships, but when applying to Jacobs, students are not considered for merit scholarships for IU.

Thank you for the info.

My daughter heard from Indiana. They are doing a second round and now they are doing a Virtual Info Session.

My daughter recently had her interview for LMU and she really enjoyed meeting the department chair. Is your daughter still enjoying her experience? Was she able to get any merit aid to assist with the COA? Thanks for the help. I think my D21 is more interested in the campus after meeting with the chair.

How is the waiting coming along? D21 has heard from 3 schools, awaiting decisions from 5, and still needs to complete one first round audition in a couple of weeks.
