Dance Audition

Hi! I’m auditioning in Chicago at Unifieds and one thing that terrifies me about auditions is the dance portion esp because I have NO formal training. How intense is Point Park, especially in relation to other schools? I just did my BoCo audition this past weekend. oh, and how much does the dance portion affect acceptance?

Point Park’s was the easiest dance audition I had of any of the schools I auditioned for. If you got through BoCo, you should easily be able to get through Point Park. We did “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray in a big ballroom with carpet for the floor (granted it was LA unifieds, not Chicago, but still) and it was supremely easy. Afterwards, they asked a few people specifically to do double and triple pirouettes if you had them. I think Point Park, as amazing of a dance school as it is, can tell without a bunch of flashy choreography and huge kicks/fast turns who’s a trained dancer or not. It’s also about showmanship and making the simplest choreography entertaining and watchable, at least that’s what I assumed. Or maybe because it was LA they just didn’t have their normal choreographer (I believe it was a student), but I like to see some underlining reasoning there. I know of people who were accepted to the MT program based soley on LA Unifieds so it worked for them!

Also, sort of off point, but in remembering the dance audition I remembered that Point Park was running extremely behind when I auditioned for them, and I didn’t go in until at least 45 minutes to an hour after my scheduled time. I would assume they would attempt to fix things so that wouldn’t happen again, but sometimes schools just get wrapped up and have poor planning. I also ended up doing 3 monologues for them, so they definitely like to see what you have, which could be part of the reason they were running a bit behind. Just two things to note when scheduling auditions and preparing for unifieds.

DD is a freshman at PPU in dance and knows several MT majors who basically had no dance when the auditioned. There are 10 sections of freshman ballet (that both dance and MT majors are required to take) some of which are for absolute beginners through very, very experienced dancers. I guess have a large and strong dance program allows them to really level their dancers even across programs.

By the way = freshman ballet is at 8 am, 5 days a week.
