Dance Audition

Hi my name is Megan! I just registered for this board like 5 seconds ago and im going to be a senior in high school next year. Ive been looking into SU and i really am excited to audition for the MT program.
I am not nervous at all for the singing and acting parts of the audition , but i have never taken any dance classes and the most I know is the few moves we did when i was in West side story… lol soo… i was wondering for any of you have been through the dance audition … is it very difficult? do they have anything that seperates the beginners from like the advanced people. Could somebody just tell me basically what the dance audition is like??

Thanks so much … sorry for such a long ?

Hi Megan! Checkin out the posts here for SU / MT folks and read your question. I'm 'Chris'dad, and my son Chris is a freshman at SU in MT. I think Chris would be a very good resource for you to talk with, and I will mention your post to him. I'm sure he will get back to you soon. Good luck, and go for it!!

Hi Megan!

My name is Alex and I will be a freshman at Shenandoah this year for musical theatre. I am also not a dancer. I can't sing and act my heart out, but dancing is a different story. However... I had no problem whatsoever with Shenandoah's dance audition. It was run by one of the musical theatre faculty members and a senior musical theatre major who taught us a 32 count dance sequence. They were very very nice and the dancing was standard musical theatre dancing. It was a very calm and stress free environment. (Well as calm and stress free as an audition can be anyway...) We went over the sequence numerous times until everyone auditioning had a good feel for it. The senior musical theatre major danced with us at all times including the actual audition! Keep in mind though that the audition last year was the first one at Shenandoah that entailed a dance audition so it might change... :-/ Good luck with your college auditions! It's an exciting time. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I'd be happy to help in anyway I could! My aim is CnStarz11. Once again, good luck and I hope this helped at least a little bit!

Hey Megan!

My dad sent me your inquiry here. I will be a freshman at SU in the MT program this year and just went through the audition process last year. I also had no real dance experience before my senior year of high school. I had done some dance shows i.e. Crazy For You and Once Upon a Mattress (not really a dancing show, but I had a whole dance number), but that was about it. As it was told to me, in the dance audition, they are really looking at how you move, are you capable of dancing. However, right about now last year, I started taking Jazz and Ballet classes. One of the best decisions I made! There were some jazz leaps and pirouettes in the dance audition and taking even just a few basic dance classes really helped. That is what I would recommend to you. Go sign up for beginning ballet and jazz this year! Come to shadow day at SU if you can! I had a ton of fun at that last year! Best of luck to you this year!

I am also on facebook and myspace!

Megan,
I think taking some dance would be good. My d just took an occasional jazz or tap class, just to help her learn the basic moves. Relax and enjoy, that would be my advise. Shenandoah has a way of calming down the intense audition process. Shadow day is a great thing. I took d down for it. I think you should do that for any school you are auditioning to, if possible. It helps you to get a feel of the campus. Best of luck. I look forward to hearing about your journey this year.

*Hey, iNaSpotlight! I believe you had a SLIGHT typo....I KNOW you can sing and act your heart out...most beautifully, if I may say so! (totally unbiased opinion!) You CAN sing and act your heart out! Slow down honey! :) *

Hey Megan!

Happy to know we helped! Shadow Day is free, all you have to do is sign up! I was just talking to the SU Admissions lady this past thursday and they havent really started advertising Shadow Day yet. However, I am sure if you called up the Conservatory Admissions office, you could get signed up or at least put on the mailing list

Shadow Day says it all in the title. You basically just shadow a student around for the day. Go to classes with them, eat lunch with them, hang out in their dorms with them and their friends... a really awesome experience. At some point in the day, there is an audition workshop where one of the faculty will work with a few shadows on audition stuff, music and performance of an MT piece. I was lucky enough to be picked to sing at this workshop. So, bring music with you! and when they ask for volunteers, get your hand up! haha. They have already asked to me shadow this year, so I hope to see you there!
