I read earlier that PSU has callback dance auditions on campus for those who audition at unifieds… Is that still happening? I can’t find any info about that on their site…

My son was admitted through the Unifieds in LA. He was not required to reaudition on campus nor were any of the other students in his freshman class. They are currently revamping the web site and it is a lttle hard to find the MT information. I suggest calling Paula Wheland in the Theatre Dept for all info re the MT audition/admission process.

The callback on campus has not been a dance callback in the past. The entire group of auditionees does a group ballet and a jazz combination for the auditors ( 2 groups if there are large #s) , then individually the auditionees go in front of the panel for the monologue and songs. After that, there is a callback where the panel interviews the auditoner, and they might have the auditionee sing again. The piano test is also given at this time. I do not think any dance happens at this callback, as the entire audition is taped. Hope this helps.

I misread the ?, sorry. It is late. I am prteey sure that the past 2 years there were not callbacks on campus for dancing.

Last year, before my D auditioned for PSU at NYC Unifieds, I called Paula Whelan of the PSU MT Dept to ask her about the whole callback thing for kids who audition at the Unifieds. She told me very clearly that that was not something that would happen again, and that each kid's audition would be complete at Unifieds at the site at which they auditioned.

However, I am told that there are callbacks of a sort for kids who audition on campus in State College in that once everyone has auditioned on a specific day, a list goes up saying who has been "called back" to be seen again. Apparently, if you are not on that list, you know that PSU is not considering you.

This thread is likely getting confusing, LOL.

There are two different things being discussed.

One....the Unifieds. IN THE PAST, I think the PSU NYC Unifieds included dance (as they do on campus as well). But the Chicago and LA Unifieds for PSU did not include dance and if they were interested in you after the monologues and songs (in LA or Chicago), they asked you to come to campus for a callback. Frankly, this practice was not so great because the whole purpose of Unifieds was to NOT go to campus. Then, these selected kids had to ALSO go to campus and found out with very little prior notice which means an unexpected expense, as well as most people's winter schedules are full with all their auditions already figured into the plan for the season. I recall this happening to someone in Chicago and that parent contacted me on CC about it. It also happened to a client of mine who was called back after his LA Unifieds audition (which was a walk in). My D's friend who auditioned in NYC, however, and was admitted, didn't have to do this campus callback thing that the Chicago and LA kids had to do. HOWEVER.....I think PSU has wised up on this and no longer is requiring anyone at Chicago or LA to come to campus for a callback and they simply don't dance at those audition sites. And now NMR confirmed that PSU told her that was not something that would happen again and that all Unified auditions for PSU would be complete at the audition site and no callbacks to campus. It can't hurt to check with PSU this year too!

The OTHER thing being discussed here are the campus auditions and at THOSE auditions, the way it is done is that there is a dance audition and then you do your monologues and songs in front of a faculty member (and some kids are simulataneously being seen in another audition room with a different faculty member). After all the auditions are done that day, they post a callback list and if you don't make that list, you are free to go and can assume you will not be admitted. Those who are called back stay longer and then do their monologue and songs in front of the entire audition panel (including Cary) and have a little interview during that time as well. My daughter went through this and so this is first hand and she was admitted. Not everyone called back will be admitted. I think on her audition day (the last one of the year) around a dozen kids were called back to stay.

I just want to remind everyone to always check directly with the school and not rely on posts on CC. Things change year to year. For example, someone above mentioned a piano test at PSU. When my D auditioned there, there was no piano test. And then the LA/Chicago callback thing happened a couple of cycles ago and apparently not now. And so many of us share what we know but we can't guarantee accuracy as we are not the source, let alone that things often change year to year. So, always check and call the school if you need to.

There was no piano test last year, at least at NYC Unifieds. Again, do what soozie said and definitely check with the school. Go to the source, as we say in the world of journalism!

Piano test is only administered at PSU callbacks on campus. For those of you or your children auditioning on campus, they actually let each auditonee know at the end of that person's songs/monologue so one does not have to wait for the list to go up, which can be at the end of a long day if there are a lot of candidates there. Rather, as one leaves the audition room I believe they are told either " Thank you, you are free to leave now" or " We would like you to stay for the rest of the day" or something like that so it is clear. Hope this helps. If you do decide to go to campus to audition make it worth your while and plan to spend all of the Friday before there as you can go to a lot of classes (parents too) and an informal meeting with Cary. There are sometimes shows running then so take advantage of seeing the "product" there. or anywhere you go to auditon.

The piano test must be new, as my D who was called back on campus and admitted, never did any piano test at PSU but that was in 2005.

Those who audition at Unifieds do not have a piano test, I believe, as I had a client audition for PSU last year.

If you have an audition slot from 10:30-12:00 and you book another school that afternoon, what happens if they want to see you come back? Should you leave the whole afternoon open just in case?
When my D got her time from the audition coordinator there was no discussion of possibly needing to return.
Any helpful hints?...

I don't think the callback thing happens at Unifieds. We were talking about ON CAMPUS auditions where you are there for the day for one school and then at PSU, they have a callback later in the day for those they are still considering. This is not true at Unifieds.

To clarify, I believe at PSU auditions AT UNIFIEDS, you just have your slot and you never come back later in the day and you can schedule other auditions for that time.

I just called Paula Wheland, who schedules the auditions at PSU. She said if anyone has any quesions to please call her for clarification at 814.863.6819

In her words, here is the audition process at PSU:

Everywhere, on and off campus, to be considered for admittance to the program the audition includes an interview process
(not a callback), which occurs after the singing and dancing. If a student is not invited for an interview ( at any of the auditions) then he/she will not be considered for the program.

Off Campus:
There is dance at NYC but not the other locations. There is NO request for students to return to campus for additional dance audition.

There is an interview process at all Unifieds and the list goes up after the auditions but it is built in to the hour and half time frame so you do NOT need to worry about other time slots. Since Cary is the only one at Las Vegas and Los Angeles he sometimes interviews on the spot if the # auditioning is small instead of putting up a list.

On Campus:
At PSU as the student is escorted from the audition room he/she is told they can go home now or they are invited to stay for the interview, which happens after all candidates sing and do the monologue, but the list does not go up until that part is completed. Thus those told they can leave do not need to wait for the list.

For those auditioners being considered on campus an "ear" test is administered during the interview process. The piano placement test occurs after the class matriculates in the fall.

I hope this clarifies and answers questions. If not, please call Paula, as she is sweet and very helpful.

What is an ear test?

mamag63: the ear test is simply a way for your child can demonstrate their rhythm, pitch, and music theory skills. You only do the ear test if your son or daughter receives a call back, and a pianist simply played some notes, then the auditionee was told to sing it back, same with rhythms. I know first hand, I was at PSU on Feb. 28 and got a callback :)

Logistically, for the on-campus auditions, where in the day does the dance call fall? Is if before or after the 1:1 audition (or does it vary, based on one’s assigned time)?

When my son did his on campus audition this time last year at PSU, he did the group dance call first and then waited for his individual audition after.

I am sure that things can change from year to year, but that was the case last Spring.

Good luck :)
