Can anyone give me advice for what to be working on for the dance audition. The audition is in 4 months. Besides the obvious answer of taking more dance classes is there anything specific I should work on?

Turns, technique, and do plenty of core workouts!

My DD auditioned at several colleges. The main focus of all of them was ballet. Which makes sense since this is the basis of all dance. Each audition and application process was so different for each university. Pay close attention to the information that is required on the website. One wanted a head shot, another an essay to see if the applicant could write - another a dance resume with specifics as the trainings and instructors you have had. And still a third wanted a solo in jazz, ballet or modern. Good luck and keep us informed as to the process

Most seem to have a ballet class or audition in the first round, so strong ballet technique is a definite must. Secondly, many also include a modern or contemporary class. A solo may also be required, in a genre of your choice - but no point doing a tap solo for a contemporary school, so choose wisely. Some schools even want to teach you choreography to see how well you can pick it up, so experience in picking up choreographer can be very helpful, beyond technical training. Check each school you are auditioning for to find out their requirements and fine tune your application/audition accordingly.

To help my daughter out, my wife spent days pulling all of the requirements of each of my daughter’s schools onto a single spreadsheet, which when printed out, takes up 1/2 of our kitchen table. The requirements at each school all seem to vary (much more variation than in musical theater; our son went through that process last year). Amazingly, the length f the solos vary from 1 minute to “no more than 3 minutes.” The video pre-submissions are also quite different. One just wants a single solo; another wants many short solos showing a variety of styles, including tap and hip hop, for the applicants who want to demonstrate even more versatility. Some programs require headshots; most require body shots (arabesque). Pay attention to all of the details.
