dance interview

My daughter is about to start her dance auditions at various college programs including Fordham/Ailey, Marymount Manhattan, NYU, etc. Would anyone be able to give her some idea as to what types of interview questions are posed? and do the applicants change into "interview" clothes for this? thank you!

Hi my dd has auditioned at Shenandoah and Chapman University. They really did not do any questions at Shenandoah. At Chapman the only audition is a solo. So she did her solo and then they asked her some questions. Of course they wait until the end when she was huffing and puffing. Now she is auditioning at UArts next week and I think they do a group question thing. I think all the the schools do it a little different. My dd had a friend audition at NYU and it was pretty intimidating. I dont think you get an interview unless you are chosen for your solo. Good luck and just have her be herself and make them believe that their school is your first choice. :)

Hi and thanks for the advice! I wish your daughter the best of luck in all her auditions as well. We have UArts but not until March. I find this all overwhelming and am just glad its not me out there. Its good to dream though!

Ok going back a few years (S is a sophomore), some that I remember: How would you describe your position/role within a group setting? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What recent movie/play/book influenced you and in what way? And of course, the what else can you tell us about yourself?

I think the most helpful advice I can give is for her to be comfortable in her own skin, answer from her heart bc there are no real right or wrong answers here. They want to get to know her a little better and get a clearer picture of who she is. It wouldn’t hurt to think of responses to these and other likely questions beforehand so that she can answer with conviction and without too much hesitation.

Good luck to all who are about to audition.

Hi and thank you very much for your response. I appreciate the advice and will see that she has some idea of how to answer those questions. I hope your child is happy in the program chosen. This is all very exciting but overwhelming! Happy New Year.
