Dance Major and Business Minor

My daughter is a junior and is looking for a college on the East Coast where she can pursue her love of dance performance and choreography with a business major or minor - specifically to help her start a small business, not get a corporate job. She does not want a program with a focus on ballet - but prefers one where she can also do tap, hip hop, and contemporary. And she would love lots of performance opportunities. We would love some recommendations.

I have a HS sophomore and we are starting to put together a list very similar to yours- I am looking at schools that have business , marketing or arts Administration as a minor or double major. Also look at BA programs that are flexible with double majors. Some that would be good to look at that all have BA options with contmeporary/modern , etc. focus James Madison, Muhlenberg, Montclair, U Richmond, UMass Amherst, Univ of Vermont, Skidmore, Hobart& William Smith, Skidmore, U Buffalo, U Brockport, Connecticut College, Roger Williams University, Sacred Heart Univ. ( dance minor- but strong program and good business programs) , Rutgers, Goucher, American Univ, GWU, Elon, Univ of South Carolina, Uof F, FSU, University of Tampa … also in Midwest- check out ohio State university.

Also check out Dance Magazines college guide- worth buying the print copy- good charts and lists.

Montclair State has a Studio Teaching Dance BA that includes business courses, as well as the option of minoring in business. The focus of the program is definitely contemporary though, although there are tap and hip hop electives. And all dance students take plenty of ballet (though I think the requirement are less for the BA than the BFA).

My main advice would be for your dd to think a lot about what her goals are after graduation. Is she hoping for a professional dancing career? If so, most BA programs are probably not going to have the intensity of technique class that she’s looking for. But BFA programs don’t always allow for a double-major or (less often) a minor.

Programs really do vary a lot so thinking these things through now will help narrow your list.
