Dance Major

My daughter (a hs junior) wants to major in dance, contemporary. We are looking at Goucher, Bates, Connecticut College, NYU, Barnard, Skidmore - any other suggestions for strong schools that offer a major or minor in dance? We visited Elon which she loved but she is more interested in an urban location.

Brown possibly? The Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies may fit:
[Theatre, Speech, and Dance at Brown University](<a href=“Theatre Arts & Performance Studies | Brown University”>Theatre Arts & Performance Studies | Brown University)
?

Not sure. Just an urban school that shares some qualities with other schools you’ve listed.

The University of Michigan has a dance program: [UM School of Music, Theatre & Dance - Department of Dance - Degree Programs](http://www.music.umich.edu/departments/dance/programs.htm)

I’ll confess to having heard about this in an article about Madonna.

[Boyer College of Music and Dance, Temple University](http://www.temple.edu/boyer/dance/)

I’d repost here [Dance Major - College Confidential](Dance Major - College Confidential Forums).

You’ll get solid advice, and program specific info. The seperate performing arts subforums are a wealth of expertise, and I suggest them highly for anyone considering that path.

Good luck.

That’s a good list so far. I would add Bennington (though rural) and Sarah Lawrence. Bard too, perhaps. These are for BA.

Ohio State, Point Park, University of Utah, Arizona State, several Florida Schools (Fla. State. Southern Fla.U.??), U. of Indiana, SUNY Purchase. Marymount Manhattan, Fordham/Ailey, Hartt at U. of Hartford. These offer BFA and maybe also BA.

It sounds like she does not want to go to a conservatory program. Does she want a BA rather than a BFA?

You might want to buy Dance Magazine’s really excellent guide to colleges and conservatories, or the book “Creative Colleges,” or Peterson’s Guide for the Performing Arts.

But our list is a great start.

Try Muhlenberg. Near Allentown PA. you can double major

Oops, meant “your list”… left out the “y”!

Butler. University. University of Arizona. Chapman University. Julliard. Fordham.

In California: CSU Long Beach, UC Irvine. Also, U of Arts in Philadelphia, very selective, also generous with talent aid. And, a top quality program, VERY selective, would be New World School of the Arts in Miami. They accept 12 girls, 12 boys, rather like Juilliard. The director used to be at Juilliard, also Jose Limon company. Another good one is Boston Conservatory. We’ve sent a lot of excellent dancers to these from our performing arts high school.

Hi im a hs freshman and i would like to kno what the requirementz for most performing artz colleges are.

Not ending words with the letter ‘z’.

my dd as well wants to major in dance and we looked into Boyer College. Sounds like a decent program, but don’t know much about it.

Barnard/Columbia has an excellent dance program. I don’t know much about it, but it’s certainly worth looking into - especially if your daughter also wants a college with very strong academics.

And if she likes NYC, you certainly can’t beat the location :)

SopranoMom - saw you post from 2010 regarding dance colleges. How would you compare Boston Conservatory vs. UArts vs. Point Park for modern dance? Thanks
