Dance Majors Forum

I just posted a suggestion for a new forum for Dance as a Major on the Community and Forum issues board. It would be great if anyone who has an interest in Dance as a major would go over and post supporting messages so we can show CC that we really need this.
Thanks

Momof 3stars,
I am not sure what kind of dance program you are interested in. There is a ballet board that has a great deal of information about college ballet programs, but very little about more diverse or modern programs. My D is interested in dance programs also, but not ballet, so if you find a site please let me know privately. I can share the ballet site if you don't know it already.

I would like the ballet site definitely. My D also does Tap, Modern, Clog, and hip hop but ballet is where she is getting the best/most intense training as of now. Most of the dance sites I come across are not focused on the college process at all, it is mainly mothers of younger kids so we talk a lot about comps and things related to that. If you are interested in that site I can direct you to it.

I will go over and post immediately! My d was interested in a dance major but changed to neuroscience once she began her academics. The trick is in finding a program where you can do such a thing (and still get great dance training) if that is your goal.

Keeping calm,
I noticed you said your daughter is interested in dance programs, but not ballet. Have you considered Oklahoma City University? I'm a dance performance major at OCU and while we are required to take ballet, it's not the emphasis. The program is focused on tap, jazz and ballet as used in musical theatre dance.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions

THanks actingreacting
We have looked at a little, along with the MT program. OCU is on her list of colleges so we will probably make our way out there sometime next year. I am hoping this summer she will decide which route she really wants to go, but who knows.

I have requested a Dance Forum on CC's Discussion Forums and Roger Dooley has informed me that he will do that. Look for it soon I hope.

Thanks Soozie. I am hoping after this summer D will know which way she wants to go then maybe I will only need to inhabit 1 board.

Montclair State University has an excellent dance program which focuses on modern rather than ballet.

My daughter WANTS to like the Rutgers BFA program but hasn't yet observed any dance classes. Anyone here have first (second or third) hand knowledge?

Daughter really liked the Rutgers dance audition and felt the instruction would be very good --- however it is too heavily modern based for her tastes. Her background is primarily classical ballet and she was looking for a program with a strong, advanced ballet program, but one that also allowed for modern, jazz, tap, voice - etc. Her intention is to become a "triple" threat. She was fortunate to have a number of great program accept her, and has ultimately decided to go to Point Park Univ., she will be a BFA ballet major, but her schedule will require modern and jazz instruction, and will allow her to also pursue tap, voice, etc.
