Dance/ MT double major

At which schools is this possible?

BFA programs in dance and MT are going to be greedy of your time in the major. Some schools, such as Marymount Manhattan, have a dance major, MT minor. Others, including Ball State, allow a combination of major/minors – BFA MT, dance minor, dance major, theatrical studies minor. What is your goal as a performer? Some schools allow a strong dancer who is an MT major take additional courses in dance as long as they fit their schedule (some may be audited/no credit). Many MT programs have a strong dance program as a component; some do not. Look at the courses of study of schools you are considering to see what dance classes are possible, as well as whether students are levelled or all take the same dance level. Happy research! I am sure that others will have some suggestions for you as well. For my d, who was a very strong, highly-trained dancer looking at BFA MT programs, the strength of the dance department was a strong factor in her “final list” for auditions.

Thank you for your response. This sounds a lot like me. Would you be willing to share your d’s final list?

omgyayay – sent you a PM.

@ Mommafrog - Would you be willing to PM me your daughters list? My D is a strong dancer and I would really like to see the schools on your daughters list to compare. Thanks.

It should be possible, since classes will overlap, I’m assuming. One of my classmates is a double Dance/MT BFA major and another is MT BFA with a dance minor, all auditioned for!

If all goes according to plan, Pace University’s BA in theatre arts with a focus in Commercial Dance will be approved as a BFA in Commercial Dance next year. If so, a BFA in MT with a double major in Commercial Dance will be possible.

mommafrog- Would you also be willing to share your daughter’s list with me? SongSearcher- I would love to hear about your classmates’ Dance/MT experiences. DD is also a highly trained dancer looking at BFA Dance but also wants to add in as many MT classes as possible. Ultimately she wants to dance professionally in a contemporary company but is also thinking MT. Would certainly welcome any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks!

dancemom22, my DD is a dance major at Point Park where there is the option of minoring in MT. Dance majors can audition for MT (or drama I suppose) productions although the competition is pretty fierce. DD is a modern major but came out of a classical ballet program.
She also auditioned at Shenandoah for dance. Dance majors there could participate in some MT classes and audition for productions. Like you D mine was one who wanted to major in dance with the opportunity to do some MT.

As an MT major at SUNY Fredonia, they are required to do: Ballet I, Modern I, Tap I, Jazz 1, Modern II and Choreography. Before they can take any dance classes though, they have to fulfill Intro to Dance (unless their previous training tests them out?, but I’m not clear on how that works) Obviously, they can take more classes and usually do, as can the BA and Acting BFA. I’ve taken Intro, taking Modern now and doing Improvisational next semester and hopefully Ballet.

A Dance major takes Ballet I, II, III; Modern I, II, III, Jazz I, II, III and Tap I and II, Choreography I and II, Kinesielogy, Improvisational, Western Dance History, among other classes.

University of Alabama allows double majors.

Ball State is a school that has a solid dance minor that you can have with your musical theatre major. But it will be hard to find a place where you can successfully do both as majors.
