Dance Team

Hey! So I was part of my high school's dance team and it was a pretty big deal! I want to join the UCSC Dance Team but I have some suggestions for it. Idk if it's okay to bring those up or would it be rude? Like a couple things would be putting down the hair (it makes hair flips and moves more dramatic), maybe having more sparkly dance tops, and adding some of the style that my high school used that made the crowd get pumped! Oh and add some tricks like illusions, C-jumps, toe-touches, fouettes (at least for some people to do). I don't want to go up and sound like I want to change the whole thing, but I want to make it more fun to watch. Do you think this is okay to suggest? :/

I don’t know that I would advise joining a new team and presenting so many ideas that you give the impression you think what they are doing is not enough, or not good. When participating in team situations, it is best to be involved, participate in growth/ideas, but respect the existing team and their style. Opportunities will come up for you to suggest things as you integrate into the team. You have great enthusiasm, but reading your list of things you want changed was off-putting, and I’m not even on the team.

Yea that’s what I was thinking. That’s a shame. I really wanted to continue Dance Team in college but I’ll have to think if I want to join this one and would be happy with their style. Thanks for the comment!

Just curious, how familiar are you with the current UCSC team? I don’t know all that much about dance teams specifically, but there is the possibility that this years captain ( I assume dance teams have some form of leadership roles?) may be a graduating senior, and next years captain may have ideas for new approaches that you may love.

Also, keep in mind that it is a team, and if you dismiss the idea of joining for the simple reason that you know it’s not appropriate to come in and try to assert all of your ideas from the get go, then you aren’t really being a team player. You obviously are very passionate about the activity, and probably could bring a lot to the team-- so think about what it really means to be a member (there are lots of wonderful benefits) before you dismiss it out of hand.

I saw past performances of the team and I tried contacting one of the teammates to see how to try out but she never replied. I just don’t want to come in and seem like someone who is bringing down their past teams. I think I’ll still try out to see what the style is this year and what they’re going for, and I’ll ask there if there is a day where the team discusses the year’s tops and what they want to do. I definitely won’t abandon the idea of trying out, but If the captain is still there and tells me this is how it will be without changes, then I might just take dance classes as a hobby! We’ll see though! Thanks for the input! This was helpful :)

Best of luck
