Dance?

How hard are CCM's and CMUs dance auditions in MT? I'm not applying for college yet but just thinking ahead. If you totally nail the singing and acting, but kinda suck at dancing, what are the chances? Is it just placement? Thanks!

You have to be able to keep up with the dance, but they aren't looking for polished dancers. They want something they can train. CCM's audition is a MT dance that was a lot of fun. Also very doable. CMU's was a ballet portion and a jazz portion. This was a harder audition. I think they are looking for trinable dancers as well, but they want a little more accomplished dancers.

oh the people at each school told me that at CMU they don't really care if you can dance (this year's freshmen class i believe had one pretty good girl dancer, and the rest aren't dancers...yet). and at ccm, they take dancers- it seems as if most of the people they are accepting these days are dancers. though i'm sure if someone was an amazing singer/actor, they would accept them. imo

What school is CCU?

I say that cause I know a few people at CCM who aren't dancers. And people at CMU who are. I guess they all would like tripple threats, but they take double threats.

The people I know at CCM are not great dancers. CMU's dance audition was not very hard. The ballet portion was a simple adagio in place... and the jazz/theatre part was a lot of fun and was simple enough to be able to put your own character into it... not very hard, but a great audition combo.

LocoMom:

If "CCU" was a typo, and you meant to type "CMU", mentioned earlier on the thread, then it's Carnegie Mellon University: www.cmu.edu

If "CCU" was not a typo, then it's likely Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina: www.coastal.edu.

I take it that most schools only focus on ballet or jazz and don't include tap?

CMU's was harder for me, I am not a great dancer.

I think it goes without saying (though I am saying it! ;)) that the stronger a candidate is in each of the three disciplines of MT (singing, acting, dancing), the better. It's never too late, I wouldn't think, to take some ballet classes. I say ballet because it is the alphabet of dance and those who have taken ballet can apply those techniques to most other dance disciplines.

You are right NotMamaRose about ballet. We have always been told that studying ballet is very important and is the basis for most dance techniques. I think most school auditions use this.

I agree. Taking ballet has improved my posture, flexability, balance and endurance. I wish I took it from a younger age.

I've got the acting and voice part strong but my dance is very week. I'm a freshman in high school and haven't taken dance since I was about 8. What kind of dance classes should I take that will be helpful for MT in the future?

Definitely get a good foundation in ballet and have experience in jazz. If you have time, it wouldn't hurt to take tap too.

It seems that the MT schools really don't care as much about tap. Are there any schools that include this in their auditions?

I haven't heard of tap being part of any MT school auditions but, for MT in general, it is a good thing to know.

Tap is part of the dance audition at the University of Oklahoma, and it is an important part of the curriculum, as well.

This year auditioning students have been asked to tap at both Elon and Michigan if they wanted to. After the group dance auditions, if the auditioning kids had come prepared to tap, they were asked to stay for a few minutes and demonstrate certain steps. Also, at Muhlenberg for their audition for scholarships, if a student is a dancer, they can prepare a solo dance in any style. That dance must be approximately 2 minutes and they have to provide a CD of their music to dance to. So if you are a strong tapper, I don't see why you couldn't prepare a tap solo.

At boco they ask you to stay after and tap if you are able as well. So it can't hurt to take tap. And if you only have time for one dance class, i would suggest Ballet. It is the foundation for all dance.

@ Elon's audition if you tapped, you were asked to show a few steps with (no need to take off the) ballet shoes. :-)
