One thing to consider when deferring is scholarship $. I don’t think that I found that any of the tuition+ scholarship offers that my daughter received would allow a student to defer and use the scholarship the following year. She decided to maximize scholarship opportunities so that we can save her college fund for med school rather than choosing a highly selective school that would not give much in the way of scholarship money.
