Dances

I know it's a little too early to think about this, but what kind of dances will be held throughout the year? The reason why I'm asking now is because I just bought a dress for prom, and I totally forgot about the dance dress code, and my dress is borderline. I'm trying to figure out whether to save that for college, since I can't return it and buy another one or to try to get some alterations done so that it complies with the dress code (but then it'll look uglier).

Basically, will there be any dances where I can wear a dress I bought for prom?

Thanks!

yeah i was actually thinking about this, too. all my friends at UCs have formal dances and i wanna know if i'll be getting something similar at USC.

Early this year my daughter attended a winter formal sponsored by Town and Gown...sounds like it was a lot of fun, they had lots of door prizes and she won a certificate to In & Out Burger. :) It hadn't occurred to her to pack a gown but one of the girls on her floor had extras and lent her one, saving me a drive up to campus...

i was prom dress shopping in LA with my aunt a couple months ago and i mentioned that i'll be going to sc in the fall and the girl that was helping me out proceeded to go on and on about how she went to sc and how "all of sc shops [there]" and how i will have a million chances to dress formal etc etc etc... she said that greek life especially has a lot of semi-formal and formal events, but she didn't go greek and she still went to a lot of the parties and had plenty of excuses to dress up. i am definitely planning on bringing at least a couple nice outfits for more formal occasions.

If you join a sorority, there will be LOTS of exchanges, formal invites, etc. where you can where the dress.

Oh ok, thanks everyone for your replies!

Looks like I'll have an excuse to get another dress then =]

haha yay!
i love dressing up!
but i don't think I'm going to be doing the sorority thing.. does that mean that the only way I could go to a formal event of that sort would be if a frat boy invited me?

Yes, if you're not in a sorority, you can only go to a Greek invite/formal if a fraternity boy invites you. USC only has one dance, which is open to all students - this year's theme was a masquerade ball, and it was semi-formal.

So you should totally go through recruitment! :)

Actually the GLBTA puts on Second Chance Prom as well, which is a formal occasion, and lots of fun. I went this year with friends and everyone looks awesome and the food is decent. It was held at Town and Gown, they served dinner, and had dancing. If you're GLBT or a supportive ally you're more than welcome to enjoy the evening.
Sometimes Thursday Night Live involves a dance and there was a Mardi Gras party put on by ResEd that was a dance. So there are occasions to go to dances even if you don't go Greek.

For engineers (and those who like them) there's the annual viterbi ball (which I've missed now for TWO years in a row :(), and I would imagine that there's some other events like that which I can't think of right now.

there are also themed parties that regular students throw where you can dress up
