Hey! I applied early to Wash U and just got accepted. However, I'm scared I won't get priority for Danforth or Academic Scholars now. I was wondering if someone could tell me what they're looking for or what would improve my chances. Thanks.

yea, i had worried about that when i applied ED. it all worked out though--i ended up getting the full tuition+stipend Ervin. i'd say keep on showing that your interested in the school, esp. visiting

Bunni- what did you write about in your essay?

Bunni - are you a student at WashU?

i'm a hs senior now, but will be in wash u's class of 2010!

i wrote about a cpl activities i'm in that promote diversity/education/awareness: esp. tutoring and a committee i'm on for the county executive. i think i tied in why i want to be a doctor too

well, the applications for most scholarships are due at the same time so you'll at least get equal consideration but having applied ED will help. my advice would be to look at the point, background, or mission of each scholarship and market yourself to that point. for example the ervin wants diversity, leadership and community service so i wrote about my experiences working with underprivliged minority kids in a volunteering situation as well as my experiences in the field of engineering as a minority female in a field dominated by white males. i hope this helps, also play up your strong points and cater to washington, in my essay i mentioned some specific local schools i wanted to work with which meant i did research about St. Louis and the area surround washington and knew exactly what i wanted to do making me appear focused.

Bunni - I find your statement about receiving a Ervin Scholars award a bit confusing. In the past, and as far as I know they have not changed the policy this year, all Danforth and Ervin Scholars are announced only after Scholars interview weekend. All semi finalists are notified in January/February and are invited to WashU for Scholars weekend which takes place the end of March. At this stage everyone is still a semi finalist and no awards have been decided on. This year the weekend is March 23 - 26. Only after a weekend of assorted activities, meeting and extensive interviews are awards announced. You might want to check your facts concerning Scholars programs at WashU.

ST2- you're right about the interview weekends: for most scholarships. However, there's an ED Ervin scholars program. I did the interview with the ervin scholars committee when i was invited to campus for the discovery weekend in september. For those of us who did the interview and were accepted ED, we were able to be awarded the ED scholarship already. Trust me, I checked.

ST2 - bunni is correct. I too am an ED Ervin and not only did I call the school's admission office but the person in charge of the Ervin program whose secretary confirmed that I recieved the award and put me on the phone with the chairman of the program who also confirmed this fact. Theinterviews we did in Discovery Weekend in cases were a candidate is otherwise solid can substitute the Scholars weekend in March. The award still requires that you go in March simply as a social function.

Does anyone know when we get a response from WU and find out if were in the group of 40 finalists?

I think around march when the RD Erving people are selected

Does Wash U pay for possible winners to travel to St. Louis for the selection weekend? I can't imagine that they would, at the same time it would be very difficult for some of the financially needy candidates... and if those kids didn't get awarded the scholarship, they would end up being "worse off" than before. That doesn't make sense to me. What makes more sense is that everyone invited to the weekend receives some sort of scholarship, but not necessarily a full ride and official title. Also, how many kids are nominated? Does anyone have any idea? My daughter was nominated for Danforth, but I suspect her chances are slim.... Are non-invitees informed at the same time as invitees? or are decisions made on a rolling schedule?

Does anybody know when the scholarship weekend is and when they will notify us of who is a finalist?
I sorta lost my sheet.
Thanks.

I believe that the approximate numbers for last year were as follows:
Danfort Nominated 900 Awarded 16
Rodriguez Applied 1,200 Awarded 25
Ervin Applied 1,500 Awarded 30

Some of the above were not full tuition, but partial tuition awards. Some of the applicants applied for/were nominated for more than one award.

The Scholars program works in the following way. Only a GC can nominate a student for the Danforth. Students may apply for the other scholarships from the WashU website. For RD the final application date is January 15. After evaluation, semifinalists are notified towards the end of February. WashU pays all expenses for all semifinalist (all of whom are invited to WashU for Scholars weekend - this year March 24 - 26). Attendance is mandatory. The weekend consists of a variety of activities and interviews. If you are designated a semifinalist, it also means that you are accepted at WashU. Most semifinalists receive some kind of award (1/2 to full tuition +). Although not every semifinalist receives an award.

The money is obviously important, but there are many other benefits to being designated a Scholar. Among these benefits are priority housing, priority registration, special programs & seminars, research opportunities, special access to profs & staff, foriegn studies, special advisors, Scholar peer group programs and much more. The peer support during freshman year can be especially beneficial.

thanks ST2, that info was very helpful

to whomever it may concern, WashU does pay for all of the finalists to attend the finalist weekend. Even the ED admittances, this really only applies to the Ervins.

Where do you find information on the Danforth Scholarship? It is not on the main site for all the scholarships.

You are right, the Danforth program is not mentioned on the WashU site. You have to be nominated by your GC for the Danforth. Nomination forms are available from the WashU admissions office. Once the nomination is sent in, there is an application to be completed. Early next year, semifinalists are notified. All semifinalists are invited for Scholars interview weekend at WashU (WashU picks up all expenses). This weekend usually takes place the end of March. Finalists are selected at this weekend. Finalists are awarded either a 1/2 or full tuition scholarship for 4 years. There are also other benefits to being part of the Danforth program.
