I have been nominated for the danforth scholars program, and want to know a little more about the application process. First of all, does anyone know how many people are nominated and apply for the 40 finalist spots? Is the selection process more stats driven, or is it more based on our essays/ECs? Once you are selected as a finalist, how are the scholars chosen? Does anyone know the stats/profiles of any danforth scholars? Any info. would be appreciated!

I was also nominated! I've been told that if you are selected as a finalist, you will be flown down to St. Louis to be interviewed for those 40 spots.

Have you gotten your packet mailed to you with the esays and such for the scholarship? That comes after the nomination.

yeah i've been wondering all the same things as you guys...

I think the process is exactly like the other scholarships WUSTL is offering (compton, moog, ervin, etc.) but for some reason Danforth is not open to all.

how do you get nominated for a Danforth scholarship? does a nomination mean you have better chances of getting accepted to Washington University?

A teacher must nominate you, but the deadline has passed. WashU doesnt advertise this scholarship at all, and the only way to see the application, as far as I am aware, is to be nominated. It has no bearing on your admissions decision.

i got nominated too! does anybody know exactly what the scholarship entails if you get it?

Your counselors or teachers nominate you to the scholar program (basically a full-ride scholarship).

Spoke to the Danforth office yesterday. They rec'd 3,000+ apps last year. I can't imagine they won't equal/exceed that number this year.

How refreshing to see someone on these boards post factual information that they determined from a valid source.

As might be expected, the odds of getting Danforth are as daunting as getting in to begin with, and the competition is the elite of the elite. Nothing to do but go through the process as a learning experience and hope for the best.

That's assuming your counselor even knows about it....Ugh...I can't imagine it doesn't influence your admission....Nothing like having a clueless guidance office....

For the application packet, are you expected to handwrite your responses to the short answers or is it ok to paste in a typed response?

yeah i was wondering that about the application also...

I was wondering the same thing. The application form gives you so much room to hand write it.

I think I'll handwrite the short essays, and type the 500-word one.

I'm assuming they're expecting the same ~150 word responses as in the other scholarships. If it's more than enough room for 150-200 words handwritten, it's probably meant to be handwritten. I haven't tried to write the responses on there yet. The front page of the application also has to be handwritten, so probably keep the same style throughout? And the longer essay is definitely supposed to be typed.

I'm just curious. There are 1300ish members of the freshman class, yet they receive 3000 apps. How is that possible?

People are applying for admissions and the scholarships at the same time. Many of the scholarship applicants will not be accepted.

After getting nominated does not applying for the schoalrship affect my admission desicion??

Just wondering--did anyone receive confirmation that your Danforth Scholars app was processed?
