Darmouth Versus Cornell

My daughter has been accepted at several schools including Cornell CAS and Dartmouth. She is a very accomplished musician (went to a precollege music school) but applied to regular college because she also wants to do something more lucrative and practical in addition. So she is currently deciding between the two colleges mentioned above and we had a couple questions:

1) Does anyone know which college would be better for a double major and music and psychology? By "better", what we really mean is which college will make that combination the most managable with great classes in both areas.

2) Is there a measurable difference in perceived "prestige" between the two?

I can’t comment on Dartmouth, but my daughter is a senior at Cornell, and I can tell you that combining a music major with another major in the College of Arts and Sciences is very do-able. In fact, I believe that most of the music majors at Cornell are double majors.

Your daughter would also have a wide variety of performance opportunities at Cornell. There are ensembles of every description (mostly populated, of course, by non-music majors like my daughter).

Another plus: Ithaca College, which has a more professionally oriented music major than Cornell’s, is right across town. If there’s some specific topic in music that your daughter wants to study but that Cornell doesn’t offer, Ithaca College might have it, and it is possible for students at one of the schools to take courses at the other.

Thank you so much for the info! That’s really good to know.
