On that note, it is disappointing to see the Ivies use ED/SCEA to skim the cream off the top then defer 80% or so to RD. Disingenuous to call it ED or SCEA if they don’t intend to render a decision but applicant has sacrificed applying for early response elsewhere.
@dowzerw I don’t know…isn’t getting a second chance better than being rejected outright? It may be a small percentage but applicants that are deferred do end up getting accepted in the RD round.
It would be an interesting experiment for schools to include the following question on the application::
If you are not accepted during the ED/SCEA selection process please choose one of the following:
- Reject outright.
- Defer to the RD round
LOL, how many students would select choice #1?
@planner03 If an applicant knew they 80% likely would not receive a decision, how willing would they be to be constrained to applying only one early? It is not early decision if no decision is made. It is “maybe you can get an early answer” but you’ll probably get a regular decision like everyone else. I dont have a problem with deferring decisions. I have a problem with deferring decisions en masse while requiring a sacrifice from the applicant of not applying elsewhere early.
For those that really want to know, S’s letter came last year via mail and it was dated Feb 11th.
@dowzerw, actually the school IS giving a decision. The decision is no in respect to the ED/SCEA application. If a student really does not want to continue on to be considered during RD they can certainly let the school know that.
Likely letter or acceptance letter?
They must send them out in batches. Last year my son also received a likely letter dated Feb. 11. It came in the mail.
Here is last year’s thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/dartmouth-college/1735026-likely-letter-class-of-2019-p1.html
We were so clueless when my son received his. Had never even heard the term “likely letter.” We didn’t know what to make of it or how to take it! As usual, CC came through and put it into perspective eventually, but we did have a few days of being perplexed and uncertain!
Hey, isn’t very late already? Last year, one wave of likelies went out in mid Feb!
There does not appear to be much/any action yet at any of the Ivies.
Columbia already sent out theirs. So did Harvard.
Brown sent out LL too.
My daughter got a likely letter from Dartmouth today, dated February 25.
Congrats to your daugher, @GoodGrief16 !!
awesome! What were her stats?
2350 SAT, 4.0 unweighted, several sports (but she’s not exceptional, definitely not a recruited athlete), lots of volunteer stuff. Engineering major. We are from a low population state so geographic diversity could be a factor.
her stats are fab…she earned it! congrats!!!
That’s still quite spectacular! Much congratulations to your D @GoodGrief16!!
Was it via email or mail?
Regular mail, single page, from Office of Admissions
I should add that she was not accepted into the fall STEM Exploration program, but was one of the rejectees that later received a package with a Dartmouth cookie and a “We still like you” note.
