Dartmouth 2023 Applicants Discussion

@Kwakhu - it’s very possible . Are the 19 you applied to as competitive as Dartmouth? If so that is why, not sure how your grades are but 1490 is not bad but not IVY league level. Kids that have prefect or near perfect scores/ grades , multiple activities etc are rejected from IVY’s .kids are rejected from their own state schools with a 1490z Best of luck getting off the waitlist . Hopefully you have a back up plan as most schools don’t take man off the wait list .

@vickyvic1 aside Columbia, Yale and Upenn I don’t think any of the schools I applied to are as competetive as Dartmouth. Yet I got rejected at all those colleges. I was aware my scores were not strong enough for ivy so I applied to lots of LACs and was rejected at them all. Bates, Carleton, Lafayette, Fand M just to mention a few. I’m very down and don’t even know what my next step is.

For my grades I had a 3.92 UW and a rank of 2/800

^internationals have it MUCH harder. Don’t get discouraged, it’ll all work out in the end ??

@Kwakhu - hang in there . Make sure they know your interest . You can always start somewhere else and try to transfer into one of your schools the next year . Keep the Faith

Rejected. It was my top choice, but I got into some other of my too choices so I really can’t complain. Congrats to everyone that was accepted!

Rejected after being deferred ED. I sent in LOCI, along with a bunch of updates to my application. I’m completely fine because I got into Cornell and Notre Dame. Good luck to all!

@Kwakhu That is what happened to me too. I am also rejected from every college I had applied to. Ugh… this sucks.
FYI I had an SAT score of 1400 (not good), SAT subject test (800,800,790- taken on the same day). But I had won a medal in International Mathematics Olympiad.

I GOT IN WOOHOO

After 6 hours this still hasn’t registered with me. I can’t believe I got into my dream school of six years! Now we just have to figure out how to pay for it!!!

Congratulations to everyone!

Accepted!
SAT:1510
ACT:34
Subject tests: 760,760,730
good EC’s
I think what did it for me was my interview and peer LOR

@jhede1 There is no rhyme or reason sometimes. DD accepted 31 act 32 superscored. No subject area exams Valedictorian, 4uw gpa tons of community service etc
Waitisted-Colby, Midd, Bates, Kenyon, UChicago, Wesleyan,
Rejected-Bowdoin, Swarthmore, Harvard, Brown, Amherst
Accepted-Hamilton, UF Honors, FL State, Connecticut College

when do packages arrive in the mail?

Rejected

@jhede1 Sorry about your news. Are you asking if you should appeal your decision? 30 is unfortunately on the low side and although they do not require subject tests, they recommend them. I doubt it would get you anywhere, maybe think about a transfer for next year. I hope you have somewhere to go that you are happy about.

Denied as expected with a 1460.

Dartmouth released admissions stats: https://news.dartmouth.edu/news/2019/03/class-2023-sets-new-milestones

To give a sense of how difficult it was to get in:

The overall admit rate was 7.9%
Admits with certain hooks was 28.7% of total admits (Recruited Athletes, Legacy, Questbridge)
Admit rate for the remaining spots was 5.8%

The mean SAT was 1501 and the mean ACT was 33.1
500 are projected to be either valedictorians or salutatorians

Here it is again broken down by ED / RD. It’s my own obsession to get a clearer sense of selectivity. Of course there are many factors, but unless the legacies and recruited athletes are removed, there is the tendency to think there is a better chance to get in then there really is. Race and location certainly play a role. Dartmouth points out the large number of accepted lower-income students (> 20%). I wonder if this is purely chance after accepting need blind.

Great interview
IDK why they said no

Actually, according to Admissions release, the % of legacies out of the total admitted pool is only 9% , ie 9%x 1876=169 students. Also the total number of Questbridge admitees is not 25 ( this is ED pool only) but 92 students, ie 4,9% of the entire admitted pool.
Finally the number of recruited athletes may increase from the 138 of the ED pool but not substantially.
So Legacies+ Questbridge+ Athletes = about 169+ 92+145 = 406 , or 21.6% of the admitted class.
However, this actually can be lower since a number of recruited athletes can be legacies as well.
