I am an international student from India. My counselor sent a fee waiver request to Dartmouth Admissions Office and they confirmed acceptance of our request. A question on Dartmouth Common Application asks:
“Even though you might not qualify for a Common Application fee waiver, Dartmouth does not want the cost of applying to be a deterrent. Your fee will be automatically waived with a Dartmouth fee waiver if any of the following apply to you: (a) Questbridge finalist, (b) participants in one of the Dartmouth Bound campus visitation programs, © veterans of the U.S. armed services, (d) students who have received free application assistance from one of the community-based organizations recognized by the Common Application. Are you eligible for a Dartmouth fee waiver?”
Although, I’m not associated with these organizations, and also none of those conditions listed applies to me, should I check this question as “Yes” or “No”?
I think you shouldn’t apply till the Admissions Office tells you if they’re waiving the fee.
@dartagnaneb My counselor said that, when she contacted Admissions Office, they confirmed, if counselor approves fee waiver request, that should be fine and no other documents would be required. However, my counselor did approve my fee waiver request and also sent a fee waiver request letter from school to Dartmouth Admissions Office. What should I do now? I am considering calling Admissions Office tomorrow to take further action.
P.S: I am applying to Dartmouth Regular Action, so time restriction shouldn’t be a problem
I think you should probably ask the folks at the Admissions Office. If they’ve approved you for a fee waiver, then likely you should be able to submit without the application fee, but being an international applicant probably complicates the process a little bit.
You don’t meet any of the requirements listed in your first post for a fee waiver so you should answer no (as all of these programs take place in the US and you are not in the US).
Dartmouth is big on integrity and lives and dies by its honor code.
Also remember that willful misrepresentation is grounds for having your admissions rescinded. wait until you get something in writing from Dartmouth stating that they will waive your fees.
Your counselor should not have approved the fee waiver based on the information from the common app above because none of those conditions pertain to you.
Your counselor should have sent an email to the admissions office explaining that you are an international applicant and seek guidance on how to obtain a fee waiver. Dartmouth would have responded as how you and your counselor should proceed.
@sybbie719 Thank you, for your input. My GC emailed Dartmouth Admissions Office but did not revert yet. She then called them. They said if my GC approves the request from Common Application, no other document would be expected. However, my GC also forwarded the official fee waiver request (on school’s letterhead with stamp and signature from Principal) to Dartmouth Admissions Email. I’ll call up Dartmouth Admissions today clear this confusion.
Thank you for your response.
@sybbie719 @dartagnaneb I spoke to folks at Admissions Office. They confirmed I should mark “Yes” to that question. Thank you for your input.

Glad that everything worked out for you.
Closing thread as the question has been resolved.
