I got this award from CSF called the "Dartmouth Book Award."
1. How prestigious is it?
2. Will it help me get into, specifically, Dartmouth?

Thanks

It's not really all that "prestigious" in comparison to other awards in Math Olympiad or Boys' Nation. It's an award, but it's nothing more than achieving honor roll at your school.

Not really. I remember someone else posted something about how he had gotten the Harvard Book Award, got accepted at Yale, but was ultimately rejected by Harvard. I think that if you do get accepted to Dartmouth and have the award, then there's supposed to be a small monetary award, but I'm not sure about that.

Some schools will give you a scholarship for winning it should you choose to attend that school, but Dartmouth gives no merit aid.

Typically, getting a junior year book award at your HS means that your school has identified you as one of the outstanding members of your class. It means more than being on the honor roll. At our HS, for example, 20 or so juniors might get into the NHS every spring, but only about 8 get book awards. (And occasionally one of them is not in the NHS.) It does not normally give you a particular "in" at the school in question, although ironically the Harvard book award winner from my S's class is going to Harvard and the Yale book award winner is going to Yale. That is a first. :) Usually the prize is a book, not money. An exception is the RPI medal, which comes with a guaranteed $60K merit scholarship if the winner applies and is accepted.

At least, that has always been the way it works around here.

It's up to your school who gets what award, so Dartmouth does not have a say of who gets it. In our school, rank 2 always gets the Dartmouth Award. I got it last year, and I got in, but I really don't think its related-as in you don't have an edge. That said, if you get the award, you would already have a good chance at Dartmouth because of your stats.

Oh and p.s. it's a book, and you don't get money at all. Have fun reading the collective works of Robert Frost :)

At my s's school the Dartmouth book award winner must be an athlete.

Usually colleges state some criteria, and leave it up to the HS to make the selection. While not totally violating the criteria, HSs seem to develop their own internal traditions around who gets what.

At our HS, for example, the teachers are asked to provide a list of 10 or so kids whom they think ought to be considered for a book award. Then the guidance department decides who gets what. Sometimes this results in slightly strange awards, due to gender and other requirements.

I got the collective works of Robert Frost :)

My question is: should I put this on my resume with all the other awards?

Collected. :)

Yes, you should.

At my school, the award is insignificant - it's given to whomever is fourth in class. (Harvard, Yale, Cornell, then Dartmouth) The award isn't very prestigious at all. But being fourth in class, I suppose, is relatively impressive. It will do little to your Dartmouth application, if anything. But it couldn't hurt to put on your resume.
