Dartmouth Chances

Hello All, I am a white male from new jersey that is really interested in attending Dartmouth. I've been reading this forum, and, seeing all these chances threads, have succumbed to making one myself. Any and all input would be great. Thanks!

Currently a Junior at a competitive public school in northern (bergen county) NJ

96 GPA, currently taking 2 AP courses, planning on taking 4 next year, all other courses are honors level

Taking both AP economics tests this year through independent study on my own, plan on majoring in economics in college

Varsity Indoor Track-11
Varsity Outdoor Track-11
Basketball-9,10
Soccer-9

Varsity Debate Captain
Peer Leadership-11,12

State Soccer Referee-9,10,11,12
Camp Counselor
Piano for 9 years-performed at Carnegie Hall

Again, thanks for taking the time to look over my profile and responding.

What are my chances at Dartmouth? 2070 on SAT 1. Math 760, Writing 700, Verbal 610. SAT 11 -Math 760, Physics 600. 4.075 GPA. President NHS, Golf Team captain 2 years, tons of volunteer work, great recommendations, Principals Leadership Award. Great public high school in Connecticut.

Just based on stats, it doesn't seem that either of your chances are terribly strong. The SATs and extra-curricular activities seem pretty typical. You're going to really want to blow them away with your essay.

orioles, i think your sports' noncommittement (or so it seems) might hurt you, so list ec's that you are devoted to and have leadership. you sat's are pretty good.

justasking, your sat's are a bit low, though you have decent ec's, so its an open shot for you

Thanks for the feedback Former SI and BingCold. I appreciate it!

I got in to Dartmouth with 720 on Math and 680 on CR. I know they are lower scores but I did a lot of other extra curricular activities with music and such. I think that Dartmouth is a more "forgiving" university personally... and I think that SAT's shouldnt be the end all. Students are dynamic in their own ways and for a school like Dartmouth to look at that (in contrast with some other universities), that gives me a new appreciation for them...

If you are a musician, as orioles appears to be, you should send in a CD of your music with your application. That can help.

And I do think that Dartmouth is "forgiving" (although probably less so this year b/c of the sheer number of applications), but I doubt the ECs listed above are enough to sway them. (it's probably the teacher recommendations or the interview or the essay).

What are MY chances at Dartmouth?

~3.5UW (~3.55UW by the end of the year)
3.8W (~3.9W by the end of the year)*

*If 1 point for AP and honors is added

High 2000 or low to mid 2100 (2070-2160)

AP:
-US History, French (this year)
-Next year I plan to take: English Language, Calc AB, Econ, Euro, (Enviro? maybe not)
SATII:
-Bio/E-630
-US History-should be around 780
-French-should be around 720
-MathII-~750, I'm estimating.
PSAT:
-216/99% in CA-I don't think I got commended though. I have no idea when those notices come out.
Extracurriculars:
-Amnesty Int'l (all four years)
-Environmental awareness Club (all four years)
-JSA (this year, next year)
-Symposium Committee (this year, next year)
-~120 assorted community service hours

A leadership position or two...
I guess an excellent essay...
Great/Excellent Recommendations...

What do you think? Automatic Reject?

Thanx.

ihateCA, 1) what's your rank (approx, i.e. guess), and 2) What percent of kids at your school go to top 15 schools?

1) my school doesn't report. but if I had to guess, like top 45 out of 150ish?(for cumulative GPA)
2) I think that percentage is around 15-20%.

ihc:

216 is definitely commended (last year was 202)...Calif cutoff was semi-finalist was 217 last year.

Hate to say it but those stats will be very difficult to get around.

Yeah, the rank really is important, my hs graduating avg was around 84% in Canada, my counselor said she wasn't allowed to put rank, even though i ranked about top 5/340+, and she wouldn't comment :(, so my avg seemed really weak.
the extent of grade deflation
I received about 80% in bio, yet i was nationally ranked on bio competition.
So i have a really weak hs transcript :(
RANK IS CRUCIAL, MAKE HER PUT IT

I am a high school junior looking ahead. I got a 2100 on my first try at the SAT and will probably reach the 2200 range, especially with super scoring. I have not done any ACT yet. I am white and uppermiddle to lowerupper class. I have a 3.7 gpa which will most likely be 3.8 come next fall, because I am maintaing a 4.0 my junior year, unweighted. I go to an extremely competitive high school, my class actually had the highest average score in the entire state in state testing last year. I am president of political club, president of admissions ambassador society, president of jewish cultural club, will probably be mock trial captain, will probably be editor of my schools literary magazine, and probably be president of student leadership committee. I am also in service club, Asian club, international culture club, GSA, and have played 2 years of varsity field hockey. I participate in wilderness programs in the summer, backpacking etc. I will have good rec letters and can (hopefully) write a good essay. I also took one AP soph year, 3 junior, and will take 3 senior. My Mom went to Dartmouth for a semester on exchange with Vassar, but I am sure that doesn’t matter. What are my chances of being accepted to Dartmouth if I apply ED?? Maybe?? Thanks!!
