Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have a pretty unique story in that I moved to where I live right before 9th grade and had to catch up academically, tutoring nonprofit that has grown pretty large

Job/Work Experience:
-Cashier at movie theater for 2014 summer.

Volunteer/Community service: I did not even list any on the Common App because it doesn’t help you get into elite schools. But I believe my recommendation writers spoke about the children’s museum that I volunteered at for two years. That was a huge commitment.

Summer Activities: Cashier at movie theater

Essays:
Common App – I chose the “place of solace” topic. My college essay was simple, yet beautiful, authentic, and richly detailed. It is all about my love of going to the library, and by far, it is the best piece of work I have ever written. I think that it is an honest portrayal of who I am, and it exemplifies my love of learning. I had this essay published in a national literary magazine.

My Dartmouth Essay was about my love for the French language. C’était magnifique!

Teacher Recommendation:
One from my French teacher (10/10) - I am a heavy participant in this class and I have been the top student for 4 years. I tutor, I share French literature that I read in my spare time with my teacher, I do research for the class, and I’ve taught a little.
AP US History Teacher (9/10) - I was the top student in this class and I won an award for my efforts. I adore history and I am also very concerned about social issues. He told me that I had the best projects and essays in the class.
Counselor Rec:
I’d give it a 9/10. We are close friends. In the summertime, my school made us fill out a sheet of all our hobbies, favorite media, and accomplishments - so I guess that helped too.

Peer Recommendation:
One from my best friend and cousin. I know it was good. It was 5 pages long, and she talked about my love for writing, traveling, and my compassion for the environment.

Interview: None actually

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: French Language, Creative Writing
State (if domestic applicant): New York
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $40,000, single parent home
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection

Strengths: My writing and journalism, my grades and scores, my essay for sure, URM status too, choice of major
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I made sure to highlight the fact that I am a published writer. I also think it’s different that I want to study French and creative writing. Make sure your Common App essay defines who you are.
Weaknesses: SAT Math score is on the lower end, but to be honest, I’m proud of it. That’s the best I could achieve. Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have a singular passion for writing and I want to major in something atypical.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted to 6 Ivy League Schools: Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown
Accepted: NYU, Fordham, University of Connecticut, SUNY Binghampton, SUNY Stony Brook, Siena College
Rejected: Yale, Columbia, Hunter College, Queens College

Other:
I’m ecstatic! Congratulations to all who were admitted.

I applied to all 8 Ivy League schools and I was admitted to 6. I am not a legacy or a first generation, for those of you who would like to know.

It’s really not about being the perfect student, but painting yourself in a light that gives the best perspective on your strengths and uniqueness. It was stupid competitive this year, congrats to everyone who got in!

State (if domestic applicant): Massachusetts
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Private, competitive
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: enough not to get aid
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): hispanic
Reflection: don’t really know what I could have done differently, except take an easier course load in Senior fall. I took two classes with notoriously tough graders. I took a risk and thought I could meet the challenge but it backfired. I actually had the worst semester of my high school career.
Strengths: ACT (ish), hooks, supplement, summer activities? ACT
What you tried to focus on in your application -
Weaknesses: Fall GPA, subject test scores, and not enough leadership?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: too many similar people, not meeting a niche
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: Northwestern, WashUStL, Hamilton, Amherst, Bowdoin (Faculty Scholar award), NYU, USC, William and Mary (Monroe Scholar), UMich (EA/Deferred first), UVA
Waitlist: Middlebury and Vanderbilt
Rejected: Dartmouth, Yale, and Brown (all high reaches)

I found reading stats really helpful when I went through the process so I feel I owe the next class of applicants. I believe applying to many schools has is benefits. I was accepted at 2 reaches and it feels better to get acceptances than rejections. But, making a final decision is harder than I thought it would be…had I been accepted to Dartmouth, it would have been a done deal. Lots of visiting to do and sort of exciting…who knows where my path will take me?!

I’ll be forever grateful to Dartmouth for being the first school to accept me, especially in the middle of my college panic, haha. Future applicants, don’t give up hope and believe in yourselves. Being such a typical Asian applicant, I never thought I’d get into any of my dream schools, and I feel so fortunate to have so many amazing options. And remember, the list of schools you get into and don’t get into doesn’t change anything. You’re still the same person you were before you got your decisions. Congrats to everyone in the Class of 2019 on all of your decisions. We did it guys:) **

College Confidential is truly the epitome of evil however it would be hypocritical of me to not post since I have spent more hours than I care to admit on this website. Hopefully this provides someone out there with some comfort and ease.

General Comments:

Like I said before, this website is absolute evil. It makes you compare yourself to others, lowers your self-esteem and honestly makes life a little bit (A LOT) crappier. But hey, I spent wayyyyyy to much time on this website so I would feel guilty if didn’t post. So because I am compromising my principles by posting on this website, I feel like I should share the immense amount of wisdom I have gained over the past couple of months. Instead of trying to analyze my stats and figure out how the hell I got in, here are some things to take away from this is: 1) Do not compare yourself or try to copy others. It is human nature but try to remember that everyone is unique 2) please don’t try to look for some pattern on these stat threads. Trust me. I tried, I failed, don’t waste your time. 3) You may think that some people on this website who are rejected/accepted are gods who can walk on water but…dramatic pause… it is all an illusion (GASP). What you see on these stats are people in their best light with all their flaws excluded. I mean looking now at my stats, I am quite impressed but if you met me in person, haha, that would be a different story 4) You probably won’t believe me now but no matter how good the acceptance feels or how shitty that rejection feels, you won’t remember it a couple months down the road. For those who were rejected, just remember this, you can’t mourn a fate that isn’t yours. You WILL end up in a place that is right for you, a place that will make you happy. So even though you may think I am just spouting out a bunch of bullshit, all I ask for is to give me the benefit of the doubt.

Wow that was a lot. If you made it to the end, AWESOME! I hope I was able to enlighten you. So, in summation, be yourself, like the number pi there is no pattern, unlike what you may see on this website none of us are perfect, give me the benefit of the doubt and in the words of Stanley Fich, have fun, be safe, and party hard.

[
] Job/Work Experience: my mom had an after school daycare for a few years and I tutored them pretty much every day and kept them company until their parents came around 9. Did this from 3rd grade to 11th grade, about 5-6 h per day. Didn’t actually get paid for my services (darnit mother) but it was pretty fun.
[li] Volunteer/Community service: lots of volunteer with habitat for humanity (200-300h) and a lot of other random things in the community[/li]
[] Personal Statement: 9/10; my parents and teacher liked it and kinda teared up-ish. Talked about personal struggles acclimating to American society and learning a new language and seeing my first death and a whole bunch of other stuff that happened when I was four.
[
] supplement: 7/10; kind of rushed but it was about playing the game of thrones board game with my cousins and seeing how the simple things in life are so important and that you should enjoy yourself. Kind of like a yolo thing and an f u at the time to my dad because he was putting a lot of pressure on me to apply to more schools. Though I love him he can sometimes be a bit overbearing.
[] Teacher rec: english/avid teacher (10/10) was really close to her as a freshman to a junior (before she left for a better job), she pulled me out of my shell and was a great formative force in my high school career - encouraging me to apply to unis that I never dreamed of being accepted.
Chem teacher: idk (6/10?) wasn’t that close with her, but did take her chem I and II class

[/ul]General Comments: I am honestly so happy and fortunate that I got into so many great schools to choose from. Admissions is so random and such a crapshoot that you just have to go in being wholefully and unapologetically you. It is my belief that the admissions officers are not looking for anything in particular, but they want to see who you are and how your personality will match with their institution. Test scores and gpa matter to an extent but navigating through the admissions process has taught me that essays are one of if not the biggest factor in your decision (of course you should have solid stats too). Also, I should tell any students coming into the application process to be confident in yourself and your achievements so far. I came in really insecure about my accomplishments, often comparing myself to those on cc, but just be you and work it. If I can make it into some of these colleges then y’all will be able to too. Good Luck!! and have fun with it. College apps tell you a lot about your character through the reflective nature of the essays, so learn something new about yourself. I am SO excited to start visiting these schools, and I cant wait to start my college years next fall!!! Gotta get back to calc now!.. senioritis procrastination is so real that its unreal. Any have fun, and to all the acceptees this year, CONGRATZ!!! Y’all worked so hard and its finally paying off!!
