but it seems like from private schools you only get in if you have a legacy… My friends daughter had at least a 4.0/4.3 at one of the hardest schools and tons of extracurricular including a start up. maybe my daughter would be better off applying from a slightly worse school with less people who donate
Last year there was a 27.8% admit rate for ED.
These 555 students represent 47% of the total class.
Keep in mind that approximately 60% of the students accepted during ED are hooked: recruited athletes, Legacies, Facbrats, Developmental cases.
If you back out the number of accepted hooked students from the number of applicants unhooked students had a 13% admit rate last year, not counting students who have matched through Questbridge in the ED round.
@jbrad2868 I got into Dartmouth with full financial aid as an international student. The admit rate for international students is about 4-5% at Dartmouth since about 25% of applicants are international and only 8-10% get in. I’m sure that your daughter will do fine without donations.
Very interesting to see so many deferrals this year.
I’m a member of the class of 2020. When I applied to Dartmouth I applied early and was deferred. I then ended up getting in RD, so
It does happen. I emailed a letter of continued interest, updated my portal with some new achievements, and emailed my admissions rep a few times.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
@jbrad2868 That’s anecdotal evidence at best. Sure, being a legacy in which your parents have donated enough to warrant special treatment does give a significant advantage — this is true at any school, not just the ivies — but that doesn’t mean those 500 ED spots are reserved solely for that type of student. If Dartmouth is your daughter’s first choice, then she should apply ED.
Finally, some actual information on ED numbers. http://www.thedartmouth.com/article/2017/12/dartmouth-admits-24-9-percent-of-early-applicants
Wow 13.5 percent! Hope this is a good sign for regular decision app numbers.
For those who are interested, I heard that for our region the acceptance rates were ~30% for ED. Deferral ~55% and rejection (obviously) ~15%. Not sure about national numbers.
i believe this is absolutely true.
@sybbie719 do you have a source for this? I believe you, just want to see it on paper.
@mtn888 The school newspaper often publishes a lot of these numbers…

You can get other info (e.g number of legacy students enrolled, etc) from the Dartmouth Fact Book or the Common Data Set which can be accessed here.

Beyond that @sybbie719 can give you better guidance.
@TTdd16 Thanks for the facts.
