Ssybie;
Great Post! You hit the nail on the head.
It's NOT all about the numbers. The numbers just qualify you to apply. The real question admissions wants answered is; "what can you offer to our college that's really exceptional?"

Tchai; The numbers only qualify you to apply.
It's your exceptional talent in a specific area that will gain you admittance. Again, what "hook" can you offer?

As I said before, my friend got in without any hook. Really her essays weren't that good--more average and uninspiring. However, she had solid stats just like you do. She got a likely letter from Dartmouth.

rskibum--I think tchaikovsky's "hook," as stated before, is that he is a a classical composer. Quite frankly, I'm very impressed by that! Who else can write pieces of music and have near-perfect stats? In a PM, he told me that he's entered some top competitions for compositions, and has recently won quite a few.

Yes, what lionheartop2 said is true. I have already contacted all my colleges to let them know about my new composition awards. I didn't include them though on my chances post because I didn't receive them until after I created these threads (for some reason, I'm not allowed to edit my posts).

ur only allowed to edit until 20 mins past ur post time.. not beyond..

btw gr8 shot man, with stats and ECs. I have seen the rejection of stellar EC+Stats combo too but i strongly have the feeling that they never cared the gr8 deal about their reco, Essays and application filling.
many apps are rejected coz they forget to turn in right documents, never completed apps and so on.. which in the end raises the eyebrows to reviewer as to what made the cause of rejection of such a stellar candidates..

a little caution and effort in all parts of application wud def make sure a 50%+ chance of admission.. Yes admission is a game.. but here the prob is def high on for ppl who giv in their extra beyond stellar stats and Ecs which can better anyone..

Also some ppl are rejected based on their poor response in the application forms .. not exactly forms i would say .. but their causal approach to the whole thing coz of overconfidence in the stats + Ec combo , which as expected turns out the detrimental results as ever. We here at CC or anyplace never really come to knw of that and to us the game becomes even more of a gamble.. which is not so..

I have strong points for my argument along with sum favourable proving cases too .. but no point discussing them..

Tchai;
OK. If you focus on your talents, you'll greatly strengthen your cause.
I've seen your posts at Williams and at D's.
Your list of colleges choices is lengthy.
Good luck!

I think you have a great chance at Darmouth, just make sure you do well on the interview and you should be fine :) . I think what Ssybie said has some validity... personally, I don't know too much about Dartmouth and Williams (I would assume they're alike). You should find out as much you can about the college before you make the choice where to go --trust me you'll have quite a decision to make with all those acceptances.

By now, you should be getting into the mindset of where you want to go, rather than where you will get accepted. I'm sure you know you will get in almost eveywhere :)

lionheartop2, thank you so much for the feedback. Yeah, I know it's going to be a long and hard process figuring out where I really want to go, but I'll be ready for it :).

tchaik, you aren't applying to Yale, are you? I ask because I've seen you posting a lot on that board. I realize that it could be that that's where all the cool people post (hehe, I guess I'm a bit biased) but I'm curious. If you are, we've got a pretty similar list of schools.

Hahah, yeah rhapsodynshadow, I've seen you around also! No, I'm not applying to Yale unfortunately :(, I just post there since there are some cool threads.

Here is an update that I sent to all my colleges:
-National Merit Finalist
- My science bowl team made regionals (so far) for the National Science Bowl Competition
- One of my music pieces was announced to be premiered Dresden 2006 - Sound, City, Silence composition competition (for piano trio).
- I was accepted to attend the Third International Workshop for Young Composers (rolling acceptance)
- Third prize for International de Composition pour Orchestre d'Harmonie (performance in June)
Hopefully it will help? :)

Pasted from Hoops921 (exactly the same letter I think):
Greetings from Dartmouth. I hope your senior year is going well and that you are enjoying your courses and activities.

My purpose in writing is very simple--we have reviewed your application and think you are an outstanding prospect for Dartmouth. I recently read your folder and was exceedingly impressed with your academic accomplishments and intellectual potential. There is no question that when we mail our final decisions at the end of March, you will be offered admission to the College.

I see no reason to delay letting you know about the status of your application, and I hope this early indication will "ease your mind" a bit. The college admissions process is unnecessarily long and anxious for many students. So, relax, get back to that book you meant to read, and use this time to reflect on your plans and goals for the next phase of your education.

If you have any questions about Dartmouth, please let me know. In the meantime, best wishes for the remainder of your high school career.
