hello, from Asuncion-Paraguay here

hola! im gonna try out…i got crazy strength and endurance, so it will be easy for me to make it once i get the technique.

Anyone can join, and as long as you don’t get demoralized by the end of your first year…it’s not that bad. If you can run fast and long, that’s usually a good indicator of your ability to do the sport.

My son is on Dartmouth’s varsity lightweight crew team and LOVES it. He had rowed in high school but walk-ons are encouraged to try out and some do make the team. What they will look at is your 2k erg score. (I don’t know the details but you calculate this on an erg machine, which most gyms have.) They have different standards for lightweight and heavyweight but I don’t recall what they are.

I know that running is considered a good predictor of rowing (maybe because both require endurance) but my son doesn’t like to run and rarely does it. What he does love is biking.

Crew is time-consuming- I think there are practices six days a week- but worth it to my son.

Next weekend he and the other sophomores who are on campus during the summer are going to Toronto to race in the Royal Canadian Henley and I’ll be there to watch- can’t wait!

momofrower, how tall is your son?

He is 6’3" but he the tallest in his team, I think.

So I’m 5’10"-5’11", 147ish lbs, been rowing for a little over 3 years, 7:14.5 2k PR (although this was in May and the day after a tough erg workout). My goals are to break 23 for the 6k this fall (should be pretty doable), and hopefully break 7 for a 2k in the spring. I also have pretty good on the water results. 3.9+ GPA, 2130 SAT, IB Diploma Canidate. Any chance of getting recruited?

Rownathan,

The “recruitment” process for my son was pretty informal- he met with the lightweight coach when we visited Dartmouth in the summer and then kept in touch with him via emails and was invited to campus for a long weekend in the fall of his senior year with other high school students. But, there is no scholarship money involved at Dartmouth and the process is low key. I know the coach can petition Admissions to give consideration to a few rowers but I don’t know how many slots he has or what the minimum academic standards are. If a student has very strong stats the coach may not petition for him because he figures that the student can get accepted without his help and doesn’t want to “waste” a slot on someone who will get in on his own.

A recent complication is that the lightweight coach, Coach Perry, announced last week that he is leaving Dartmouth to coach for Navy in Annapolis, so now they are scrambling to get a replacement. The student recruiting process may be less organized than usual in the fall. I suggest that you email the freshman coach (I think it is Coach Conley but you can check the website) to express your interest and find out if you can meet with him.

I think my son’s 2k was also about 7 when he was in high school. Good luck with it if you decide to pursue Dartmouth.

thanks (10char)
