Dartmouth Early Decision 2016 Official Thread

OMG ACCEPTED!!! Sooooooo excited!

Accept me into the fb group!

ahhhh deferred. it seems like a lot of us got deferred. how much of the pool actually gets deferred?

I think its something like 1/3 of the ED pool gets deferred and 5-8% of those people get accepted.

Accepted!!!

Congratulations to those admitted and best of luck to those deferred and rejected! For those of you admitted, have the financial aid packages been posted? I received $0 but that seems a bit weird after my family and I were expecting some aid at the least. It currently says that there is a special letter to be sent. Does anyone have a clue what this means?

Thanks!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
•SAT I (breakdown): 2350 (Math: 760, Reading: 790, Writing: 800)
•ACT: N/A
•SAT II: Literature: 770, Spanish: 730 (could’ve and should’ve done better!), Math II & U.S. History (took in December, so don’t know the scores yet).
•Weighted GPA: 4.26 out of 4.50
•Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank, but definitely in the top 5%.
•AP (place score in parenthesis): Psychology (5), World History (5), Human Geography (4)
•IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
•Senior Year Course Load: Pretty much the hardest (AP Spanish, AP Stat, AP U.S. History, AP English, Physics Honors, etc.); also, I took the greatest number of credits possible.
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Spanish Exam Gold Medal, President’s Volunteer Service Award Gold Medal, and none other too spectacular.

Subjective:
•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Leader in two clubs, tennis JV, track & field, school newspaper, jazz band, and a few more.
•Job/Work Experience: Intern in places related to my interest in international relations and government.
•Volunteer/Community service: Steady volunteer at a senior nursing home.
•Summer Activities: Some research opportunities, but nothing too serious.
•Essays: Very creative format, unique subject matter, and reflective of my passion for international relations and literature; English teacher told me that mine was the best among all the essays that she read this year; since Dartmouth only requires the Common App essay, I made it a point to show it to every English teacher I could grab at my school (4 in total) and undergo a brutal revision process following their advice or going with my own instinct in some areas.
•Teacher Recommendation: 1 from Spanish teacher (amazing), 1 from English teacher (great). By the way, I obviously couldn’t read them, but just by what they were telling me, I think they were both awesome.
•Counselor Rec: Fantastic, I assume - I am very close to my counselor, and he thinks very highly of me.
•Additional Rec: None.
•Interview: Alumna was an extremely calm, intellectual woman - at first, I thought she didn’t think much of me because she was a bit reserved and contemplative, but I think she liked me overall.

Other
•State (if domestic applicant): PA (I’m an internatonal student who has lived in the U.S. for about 4 years - only attended high school here)
•Country (if international applicant): South Korea
•School Type: A public school renowned for its great academics
•Ethnicity: Korean
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: Lower class
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, I guess? But then again, not really because a lot of Korean students apply.

Reflection
•Strengths: Teacher/Counselor recs, essay, focused ECs that reflected my commitment to literature and international relations, test scores
•Weaknesses: Essay (believe it or not, I think that I could’ve made it a lot better if I had thought it through more slowly), non-existent awards and ECs (I mean, have you seen the ECs and awards of people on here??? World-class scholars and international champions, to say the least…but I’m not).
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think D regarded me as a unique individual whose passion for literature & internatonal relations was conspicuous on her essay.
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Only D!
General Comments:
I’m so happy that I got in! I am so surprised to have been admitted because D has a very low admission rate for int’l students (I mean, what IVY doesn’t?) and especially those int’l students who apply for FA…and I was that student. But they gave me a really generous FA award, and I’m grateful. Also, I was extremely discouraged by the CCers on here with pages and PAGES of extracurriculars and awards…I thought my lack of ECs and awards would definitely cause the adcom to flat-out reject me, but I think they really appreciated the painstaking work that was my essay and my teachers’ excellent recs. To all the CCers out there who have similar concerns as me (particularly int’l students with high aspirations but discouraged by the black legend about how applying for FA to an IVY is a straightaway ticket to rejection), please keep on dreamin’! Try to cultivate your own special voice in your essay and form a strong, close relationship with your teachers/counselor - make them your mentors and friends! And if you do not have the means to do a ridiculous amount of ECs and to participate in a **** load of competitions, don’t worry, do the best you can with the available resources at your school and your community and be consistently engaged in those activities that really interest you or that connect the most with your major interests. KEEP ON DREAMIN’! DARTMOUTH, HERE I COME!

Reflection
•Strengths: I guess all of my letters of recommendation were VERY STRONG, including the alumni interview report, peer rec, the 2 teacher recs, and the counselor rec. I also have very unusual extracurriculars that I’m very dedicated to, very strong community service experience, a lot of awards and recognition, and AWESOME essays. Also, my SAT Subject Test score for Biology and my AP scores.
•Weaknesses: ACT testing, class rank, and GPA
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m a very strong candidate when you don’t count GPA and ACT scores, which is a really dumb comment, but it’s true. Everything else in my app was really strong.
General Comments: Dartmouth is still my top choice!
