**Dartmouth International Applicant's Thread 2017**

Hey guys, sorry I’ve been off this weekend! Been missing this crowd! (Just no internet at home, only at work… and my phone is just a pain) haha.

The G** is God - I put the asterixes when I think it could be offensive to some people :P

@Rishav
So glad you finally got your Pton interview organised!

@Hopingforbetter
I didn’t get any question similar to what you said, apart from what I am wanting to get out of Pton. There are no set questions that they are supposed to ask, they get an email basically just telling them to ask questions, find out about the person, and then write a 500 word report (give or take). Well according to my interviewer.

Best of luck to all the Indians in their Maths on Tuesday and English on Thursday! best of luck.

I also got quite a lot of VIP applications; Drexel, UKentucky, and a couple others… I didn’t apply to any of them though.

Hope everyone is doing well and not dying completely from all the stress of exams and results :P

Don’t know if I have missed anyone out… but here is the update guys :)

Just an Update

Say hi and post the following:
Name:
Country:
Hobbies/ECs:
And if you want… intended major:

@Raith - Great to see you back!! :D

Work keeping you busy?? :p

@Hopingforbetter - As Raith said, I think every interviewer has his/her own style of questioning!! :)

Guys I need some serious advise…
Should I call admissions Dartmouth…or should I wait for a response for my mail…
Their deadline is Feb 28…and I don’t know How I can submit school transcripts again…Is it part of the school report…or something else!!!
Help…Im am a little worried now:(

Wait, are you talking about a “school profile” or are you talking about your “High School Transcripts” ???

If it is your high school transcripts, then ask your counselor/principal/whoever to recheck whether he/she submitted the Secondary school report & the International supplement to it. Usually, as it is with the commonapp - there is a “save” button and a “submit” button - my counselor had saved it and let it go, but I asked her to recheck after my Penn portal showed “not received” long back!! :)

If you’re counselor/principal has submitted it and Dartmouth hasn’t got it - CALL them up ASAP or ask your counselor/principal to call them up ASAP. Mostly they’ll ask you to the mail the documents again! :)

If it’s the “school profile” - then it’s another headache altogether!! But that doesn’t count in the admission process!! :)

@Rishav
Good to be back bro :slight_smile:
You have no idea :stuck_out_tongue: it is my holiday and I am basically working a full day :stuck_out_tongue: but still tons of fun :D

@Quiver
I agree with Rishav that you sould try call them ASAP, sometimes it does take a while, but better to be safe than sorry.

@Raith - That’s great!! What kind of work are you doing now?? The same “shadowing the mechanics” stuff??
And did you get your pilot’s license??

@Rishav
Yea, still basically shadowing, but I am actually doing a lot of the work not just watching :slight_smile: so trying to work out ways of taking out and fixing hard to reach spots.
Right now we are taking apart the front wheel lock system. I did watch one of the electrical engineers change about 10 or so wires from a broken port/housing to a better one which was kinda cool.

The pilots license will take about 3 months bro :stuck_out_tongue: I have to get about 40 hours flying as well as study the book and pass all the exams xP it will take a while.

Ahh, yeah - forgot about the hours you need to have to get a pilots license!! And actually 40 hrs seems a bit low!!

That’s cool man!! It’s one thing sitting there and watching people do stuff, but it is so much more interesting when you get to talk about it and do it on your own!! :D

@Rishav
40 hrs is the minimum anyway :stuck_out_tongue: but it is quite a lot. It would be between 35 - 55 flights I’ve or take depending on ho long the flights are and what type of flights.

It definitely is a lot more fun not just watching! Like nothing has been particularly difficult or requiring much thinking, but it is still very good practice, I also get to see all the cables and shafts in the planes, whic is pretty cool :)

Quick question to all you Indians/Pakistanis
I met many Indian/Pakistani applicants in person and on CC and it seems like ALL of you guys are applying to engineering/CS/Physics…
Can I ask you guys why?
Do your respective nations encourage you guys to pursue education in those fields?

Sorry if this sounds racist/hostile/whatever, but curious!
I know India and Pakistan are up-and-coming IT nations so maybe that’s why?

@Iboss1223 - Well, in India (Don’t know about Pakistan), a lot of students choose engineering just because the pay & job opportunities are better after college!! Other “majors” such as journalism, sciences, etc are prevalent but less frequently chosen just because in India there aren’t many GREAT colleges for these fields and you don’t get guaranteed work after those degrees!! And MOST people can’t afford to waste 1-2 yrs of their life & certainly can’t afford quality education!! So in general, lot of students lean towards conventional - engineering/medicine/finance & business courses for a better life…

As far as for applicants applying abroad - I guess it is just a happy coincidence!! For example - one of the major reasons of my applying abroad is that - I’d like to do something related with Environmental engineering & Electrical Engineering… but in India - there is nothing such as environmental engineering & there’s no scope after college!!

I hope this clarified stuff! :)

@lboss - Im applying for Economics with a minor in Political Science/Government. :slight_smile:
And Im Indian :P

But yes a majority go for STEM related fields just because the pay is better.
Youd be surprised at the number of people who study Engineering only to go ahead and study in a B School. Half the population (NO OFFENCE) sees it as a way to get rich : Engg + MBA = Moolah.

Again, no offence.

Totally agree with Blue:)

ANYWAYS, Dartmouth people are …They don’t even pickup the phone, don’t have a email id for queries…I am a bit depressed now:(

Iboss, the other reason is that socially and artistically each society is different, so what is learned here does not always apply back home. Science and Engineering are uniformly more universal, so what you learn here applies equally well back home easily. More importantly, what you learn there in science and math applies more universally to what you do in school here. So, in science one is better prepared to succeed here.

The other reason is the immigrant fear of discrimination. When there are five applicants for a job and all are equally qualified, the immigrant fears that the job will go to the local white guys. So, they prepare for jobs in fields that have high objective barriers to entry. In other words, jobs where an objective high level of math is needed rather than subjective skill sets acquired in a frat or on the golf course or in a bar. :)

@Quiverfox - Have you tried admissions.office@dartmouth.edu?
They usually take 2-3 days to reply. So Id say wait for a while if youve already mailed them.

I tried 3 different ids…no response yet…They don’t pick up phone calls either!!!

@perraziman - I think that’s less of a concern nowadays(if there is any at all) - “white man getting the job”.

I think the main factors are money/stability, lack of opportunity in other fields(in India) and the lack of awareness among the mjaority of students about other prospective academic fields.

@quiver - try admissions.office@dartmouth.edu !! In the past week, I sent them 2 mails - each of which they replied back to within 2 days!! :D

@quiver - At what time have you been calling?? They usually answer calls from 9pm (IST) to 4am (IST)!!

Also with the emails - try this trick, email them at sometime between 9-10pm (IST), that is when the offices open & they check their inboxes from first to last. If you send an email in the non-working hours, it will get buried under a pile of emails!!
